SYRACH: Days Of Wrath

This is funny! A band I truly praised in March 2007 when they released this album on their own Ripper Management label, has been discovered and signed by Napalm Records. This means that ‘Days Of Wrath’ will be available all over the world from now on without problems and lots of homework of these sympathetic Norwegians. And the album surely deserves our renewed attention.
Syrach is all but a new band. In 1996 I bought their real debut album ‘Silent Seas’, an album typical for that time: gothic doom with heavy grunts and clean vocals, but violin and piano too. From that early line-up, only vocalist Kennet ‘Ripper’ Olsson and guitarist Rolv Erik Berge are present now. But Syrach has stayed fairly loyal to the style of music they make through all these years: slow to mid-paced doom/death with grunts and some incidental clean vocals, with melodic guitar runs, though addition of violin instantly takes the eye on ‘Silent Seas’. More flute and piano as well.
‘Days Of Wrath’ displays an improvement. The style is the same, but adapted to contemporary standards. The songs have more coherence and they are less complex, so they avoid inconsistency. They call it doom with a rock ‘n’ roll attitude and that is proved by lashings of frisky guitar runs. One may call ‘Days Of Wrath’ a creation that came into being by co-operation of many friends/musicians of the Bergen (Norway) metal scene. The album is produced by Herbrand Larsen of Enslaved, assisted by Ice Dale (of Enslaved fame too, but also in the new Immortal side project I and Audrey Home) and Bjornar Nilsen. On top of this we have three guest vocalists. The band chose the dark painting “Christs†made by Aaron Stainthorpe of My Dying Bride as cover art.
Let us zoom in on the music itself after all these interesting things worth knowing. The compositions are mostly long, ‘The Firm Grip Of Death’ even has a length of fourteen minutes, and that is why the compact and ultra catchy ‘Nine Fallen Men’ immediately struck me as most accessible track. It remained in my head from the very first time and it has a marvellous atmospheric centrepiece with sensitive guitar leads. But also the extensive songs have enough accelerations or conspicuous breaks to stay engrossing. Silje Wergeland of Octavia Sperati has a small part in three songs. Most beautiful in ‘The Twilight Enigma’ when her ‘goose-bumps vocals’ remind me most of all of In The Woods, but a little bit of Antimatter too. More artistic than gothic, let’s say, this female contribution. This is an album made by honest musicians, worth checking out by every fan of melancholic doom with fervid rock parts (excellent guitar skills).

Dit is leuk! Een band waar ik in maart 2007 al hoog mee opliep toen ze dit album op hun eigen Ripper Management label uitbrachten, is nu ontdekt en getekend door Napalm Records. Dit betekent dat ‘Days Of Wrath’ vanaf nu wereldwijd verkrijgbaar is zonder problemen en veel thuiswerk van de sympathieke Noren. En het album verdient zeker onze hernieuwde aandacht.
Syrach is allesbehalve een nieuwe band. In 1996 kocht ik hun echte debuut ‘Silent Seas’ dat een album van zijn tijd was: gothic doom met zware grunts en heldere vocalen, maar ook viool en piano. Alleen zanger Kennet ‘Ripper’ Olssen en gitarist Rolv Erik Berge zijn nog over van de toenmalige bezetting. In al die tijd is Syrach redelijk trouw gebleven aan de muziek die ze maken: trage tot mid tempo doom/death met grunts en enige heldere vocalen, met melodieuze gitaarpartijen, al valt op ‘Silent Seas’ meteen de rol van de viool op. En meer fluit en piano.
‘Days Of Wrath’ laat toch wel een verbetering horen. De stijl is dezelfde, maar aangepast aan de huidige standaards. De nummers hebben meer samenhang en men zoekt het minder complex, waardoor inconsistentie vermeden wordt. Zelf noemen ze het doom met een rock ‘n’ roll attitude en dat vertaalt zich in heel wat vinnig gitaarwerk. We kunnen ‘Days Of Wrath’ gerust een creatie noemen die tot stand gekomen is door de samenwerking van allerlei bevriende muzikanten uit de metal scene in Bergen (Noorwegen). Het album is geproduceerd door Herbrand Larsen van Enslaved, geholpen door Ice Dale (eveneens Enslaved, maar ook de nieuwe Immortal afsplitsing I en Audrey Horne) en Bjornar Nilsen. Bovendien zijn er nog drie gastvocalisten. Voor de cover koos de band het donkere schilderij “Christs†dat gemaakt werd door Aaron Stainthorpe van My Dying Bride.
Na al deze interessante wetenswaardigheden, nog even inzoomen op de muziek zelf. Meestal zijn het lange nummers, ‘The Firm Grip Of Death’ heeft zelfs een lengte van veertien minuten, en net daarom springt het compacte en uiterst catchy ‘Nine Fallen Men’ er wel uit als meest toegankelijke compositie. Het zit meteen in mijn hoofd en het heeft een prachtig atmosferisch middenstuk met gevoelig gitaarwerk. Ook de lange nummers bevatten echter genoeg versnellingen of opvallende breaks om te blijven boeien. Silje Wergeland van Octavia Sperati heeft een klein rolletje in drie nummers. Het mooiste in ‘The Twilight Enigma’, waar haar kippenvelzang me nog het meest doet denken aan In The Woods, maar ook aan Antimatter. Meer kunstzinnig dan gothic dus, deze vrouwelijke inbreng. Dit is een album gemaakt door integere muzikanten en zeker de moeite waard om te checken door elke fan van melancholieke doom die al eens mag swingen (uitstekend gitaarwerk).
