KING DIAMOND: Give Me Your Souls… Please

Musicians are like red wine. It improves with age, as do musicians.
This 12th studio album by King Diamond is home to a well thought out concept story that was inspired by the painting “My Mother’s Eyesâ€. King Diamond has successfully produced a very varied album, thanks to the contributions of his co-composer and guitarist Andy LaRoque. In general, this is your typically arranged King Diamond album, however, it does concentrate on creating a more dramatic impact. This shifts the album more towards main stream Metal and bears close resemblance to an Alice Cooper Metal horror story, both in text and music. You won’t find much of the usual King Diamond high screaming vocals on this album. What you will hear are strong Alice Cooper-like vocals. It proves that King Diamond has room for manoeuvring. The album becomes more theatrical towards the end. That really becomes obvious starting from the 7th song.
‘Give Me Your Soul… Please’ contains very catchy riffs and very solid vocals. The melodies are very memorable and that’s why this could very well be one of King Diamond’s best albums ever. Only the future will tell!

Muzikanten zijn precies als rode wijn. Door ouder te worden wordt het onderscheid tussen goede en slechte wijn duidelijker. Goede wijn wordt dan ook met ouder worden beter! Muzikaal gezien blijkt hier die vergelijking ook te gelden.
Het ondertussen al twaalfde studioalbum van King Diamond herbergt wederom een erg doordacht concept verhaal dat geïnspireerd is door het schilderij ‘Mijn Moeders Ogen’. Samen met zijn medecomponist en gitarist Andy LaRoque is King Diamond erin geslaagd een erg gevarieerd album te produceren. Hoewel het geheel in een typische King Diamond stijl is gearrangeerd, spitst het album zich meer toe op een dramatische inslag. Hierdoor schuift het album meer op naar mainstream metal en vertoont het geheel als metal horrorverhaal heel wat gelijkenissen, zowel tekstueel als muzikaal, met Alice Cooper. Ook de typische zangstijl van King Diamond - traditioneel hoog krijsende vocalen - zijn slechts sporadisch terug te vinden op dit album. Zo komt echter ruimte vrij voor erg sterke vocalen die, zoals al gezegd, wat aan Shockrocker Alice Cooper doen denken. King Diamond bewijst hierdoor weer dat hij heel wat in zijn marge heeft. Komt er nog bij dat het album sterker (lees theatraler) wordt naar het einde van het album toe. Vanaf het zevende nummer is dit duidelijk merkbaar.
‘Give Me Your Soul… Please’ bevat zeer catchy riffs en ijzersterke vocalen. De melodieën blijven hangen, daarom is dit album misschien wel één van King Diamond’s sterkste albums ooit. De nabije toekomst zal dit zeker uitwijzen!
