Manowar has enchanted the loyal metal communion many times with registrations of their impressive live shows. By purchasing a number of videos and DVDs one could follow the self-confident band in the living room on its glorious ride to victory through every continent. This year they organized their first festival of their own in Germany. The first edition of Magic Circle Festival was an unforgettable event for all visitors. On the sixth and seventh of July 2007 bands and fans gathered in a place called Bad Arolsen and were witness of a spectacle that solicited openly for a place in the Guinness Book of Records: a stage 40 meters wide and 16 meters deep, thousands of Watts for sound and lighting and besides Manowar, some bands chosen by Manowar to perform.
I started looking at both DVDs on a Saturday night and was so impressed by Manowar’s performance that it happened to be four o’clock in the morning before I went to sleep; softly humming some hymn-like melodies. Indeed, Manowar totally excites you or not, that’s the way it always has been. After watching a number of less well-known bands on the first DVD I am glad that Manowar played many old songs, next to a collection of recent hymns. It is fun to watch ‘Herz Aus Stahl’ before a German crowd and it opens the way to highlights like ‘Army Of The Immortals’, ‘Gates Of Valhalla’, ‘William’s Tale’ and ‘The Crown And The Ring’. While the crowd leaves one can hear ‘Master Of The Wind’ which always wets my eyes. That’s a perfect hymn. I realize that Manowar must be the mother of all Viking bands and they are the roots of my contemporary love for Viking metal.
DVD2 focuses on a concert of Manowar and HolyHell in Bulgaria, but it also includes recordings of any local bands. Here ‘Each Dawn I Die’ and ‘Blood Of My Enemies’ are pure magic. We have lots of bonus material to make you keep watching this unique document. We all know that Manowar never goes for half work. Without any doubt this is a magnificent double DVD. I am looking forward to the second edition of the festival. Manowar will play their first six albums live then. Songs such as ‘Guyana’ and ‘Bridge Of Death’ live… can’t wait and it is too good to be true!

Manowar heeft de trouwe metal gemeenschap al dikwijls verblijd met beelden van hun imposante live concerten. Door de aanschaf van een reeks video’s/dvd’s kon men de zelfzekere band in de huiskamer volgen op hun roemrijke tocht ter verovering van alle continenten. Dit jaar organiseerden zij hun eigen festival in Duitsland. De eerste maal Magic Circle Festival werd een onvergetelijke belevenis voor de aanwezigen. Op zes en zeven juli 2007 verzamelden bands en fans zich in Bad Arolsen en waren getuige van een spektakel dat open solliciteerde naar een plaats in het Guinness Book of Records: een podium van 40 meter breed en 16 meter diep, duizenden wattage voor licht en geluid en buiten Manowar ook nog een reeks bands die ze zelf hadden uitgekozen.
Ik begon te kijken op een zaterdagavond en werd zo meegevoerd in de performance van Manowar dat het vier uur ’s nachts was eer ik – tevreden één of andere hymne neuriënd – mijn bed indook. Manowar heeft nu eenmaal de eigenschap om je onvoorwaardelijk te boeien of niets te zeggen. Nadat een aantal minder bekende bands hun ding gedaan hebben op deze eerste dvd ben ik erg blij dat Manowar buiten de nieuwe nummers ook erg veel songs van vroeger speelt. Het stoer meegezongen ‘Herz Aus Stahl’ (we zijn in Duitsland weet je wel) opent de weg naar hoogtepunten als ‘Army Of The Immortals’, ‘Gates Of Valhalla’, ‘William’s Tale’ en ‘The Crown And The Ring’. Terwijl het volk afdruipt weerklinkt ‘Master Of The Wind’ dat mijn ogen altijd vochtig maakt. Dat is toch wel de ultieme hymne! Ik bedenk dat Manowar de moeder van alle Viking bands is en aan de wieg staat van mijn huidige liefde voor Viking metal.
Dvd2 focust op een concert van Manowar en HolyHell in Bulgarije, maar bevat ook opnamen van enkele plaatselijke bands. Hier zijn het ‘Each Dawn I Die’ en ‘Blood Of My Enemies’ die pure magie zijn. Er is nog heel wat bonus materiaal dat je gebiologeerd aan de buis doet hangen. We weten allemaal dat Manowar nooit half werk levert. Dit is dan ook een schitterende dubbel dvd en ik kijk al uit naar de tweede editie van dit festival, want daar gaat Manowar hun eerste zes elpees integraal live brengen. Nummers als ‘Guyana’ en ‘Bridge Of Death’ live… het is te mooi om waar te zijn!
