SEVEN WITCHES: Deadly Sins

Since 1999 Seven Witches, an American band featuring guitarist Jack Frost, released an album almost every year. ‘Deadly Sins’ is the seventh in row, if we do not count the last year’s released DVD ‘Years Of The Witch’. It is a concept album about the seven sins of Mahatma Gandhi and they worked on this complicated subject one year long. Jack Frost overwhelms us with his finger blistering guitar skills. I remember vocalist Alan Tecchio from Non-Fiction, they once supported Savatage on a European tour. The album is produced by Jack Frost and Joey Vera. The latter one was in charge of the mix too and he did some bass parts on the record.
One can find lots of musical talent on ‘Deadly Sins’, but nevertheless the music did not touch me. We cannot complain about the vocals, but the flimsy drum sound irritates me more than once. The songs are not fetching either. Let us take the title track as point of reference. ‘Deadly Sins’ includes heavy riffs, aggressive drum patterns and fast and furious guitar skills, but the traditional power metal is too clinical to engross me. This feeling haunts me all album long. ‘Man Of The Millennium’ begins as a beautiful ballad – superb vocals! – but towards the end it has some weak iterations. I truly expected more with a high level line-up like this.

Sinds 1999 is er jaarlijks een album verschenen van Seven Witches, een Amerikaanse band rond gitarist Jack Frost. ‘Deadly Sins’ is de zevende in de rij, als we de vorig jaar verschenen dvd ‘Years Of The Witch’ even niet meetellen. Het is een conceptalbum over de zeven zonden van Mahatma Gandhi en men heeft een jaar gewerkt om dit album rond te krijgen. Jack Frost strooit gul in het rond met zijn snel gitaarwerk. Zanger Alan Tecchio ken ik nog van Non-Fiction die ooit in het voorprogramma van Savatage speelden. Het album werd geproduceerd door Jack Frost en Joey Vera. Deze laatste stond ook in voor de mix en enkele baspartijen.
Er is dus heel wat muzikaal talent te vinden op ‘Deadly Sins’, maar toch slaat de vonk niet over. Over de zang valt niet te klagen, maar het drumgeluid (rikketikketik) gaat me meermaals irriteren. Ook zijn de nummers weinig pakkend. Laten we het titelnummer als uitgangspunt nemen. ‘Deadly Sins’ heeft zware riffs, agressief drumwerk en fraai gitaarwerk, maar de traditionele power metal is te klinisch om me te bekoren. Met dit gevoel blijf ik heel het album zitten. ‘Man Of The Millennium’ vangt aan als een mooie ballade – erg goed gezongen! – maar verzandt naar het einde toe in herhalingen die erg zwak zijn. Met een sterke bezetting als dit had ik toch meer verwacht.
