DARKMOON: Apocalyptic Syndrome

Solid, fetching Swedish steel is coming our way from Switzerland; melodic yet overwhelming. About ten years ago, Darkmoon came into being and since that time they worked hard on their music. A couple of demos preceded the first true studio adventure which resulted in their first full-length album ‘Of Bitterness And Hate’. This 2004 recorded album drew the attention of CCP Records and gave Darkmoon the chance to perform at several big festivals all over Europe.
In June 2007 they returned to the Little Creek Studios to record their second album under guidance of V.O. Pulver and Frank Winkelmann (Gurd, Destruction, Fear My Thoughts). ‘Apocalyptic Syndrome’ is a heavy mauling record that shows a perfect balance between melody and heaviness. The band reminded me of Dismember and Amon Amarth from time to time, the latter one mainly due to the rigorous blend of death and black metal influences. Songs as ‘Caravan Of The Dead’ and ‘Human Plague’ hurry on like an autumnal southwest storm. Chunky riffs, a sonorous guitar sound and a rough grunt complete this ultra tight experience. This is the ultimate album to blow the daily greyness out of your haunted brains.
It does not matter if we may have heard this all before; it is just fetching, infectious and well executed harsh metal. I really appreciate the way how vocalist Matthias Borer cuts loose with an overwhelming primordial power in ‘Black Domain’. Feet and heads keep going up and down on those groovy rhythms. Next to the energy that Darkmoon displays, the album also has an epic tinge and a very dark timbre. In this respect listen to the occluding track ‘Before The Storm’ that showcases an epic atmosphere comparable to ‘A Dying Wish’ of Anathema. Fans of melodic Nordic death metal should give a chance to a band hailing from another region than the expeditious Scandinavia.

Uit Zwitserland bereikt ons solide, aanstekelijk Zweeds staal; melodieus en toch overrompelend. Daar werd zo een tien jaar geleden Darkmoon opgericht en sindsdien hebben zij niet stil gezeten. Een aantal demo’s gingen vooraf aan het eerste ware studioavontuur dat resulteerde in ‘Of Bitterness And Hate’. Dit in 2004 opgenomen album trok de aandacht van CCP Records en bood de kans aan Darkmoon om op te treden op verschillende grote festivals in Europa.
In juni 2007 keerde men terug naar de Little Creek studio om er een tweede album op te nemen onder leiding van V.O. Pulver en Frank Winkelmann (Gurd, Destruction, Fear My Thoughts). ‘Apocalyptic Syndrome’ is een lekker beukende plaat die een perfect evenwicht vindt tussen melodie en heftigheid. De band deed me meermaals aan Dismember en Amon Amarth denken, deze laatste voornamelijk door de rigoureuze mix van death en black metal invloeden die nummers als ‘Caravan Of The Dead’ of ‘Human Plague’ doen voortjagen als een herfstige zuidwesterstorm. Vette riffs, een helder gitaargeluid en een vuige grunt completeren het feest. Dit is het aangewezen album om de dagelijkse grijsheid van een werkdag even uit je hersenen te blazen.
Het heeft dan geen greintje belang of we dit allemaal al eens gehoord hebben, het is gewoon aanstekelijk en knap uitgevoerd. Hoe zanger Matthias Borer in ‘Black Domain’ tekeer gaat met een overdonderende oerkracht kan ik appreciëren. De voetjes en het hoofd gaan onverminderd op en neer. Naast de energie die Darkmoon ons tegemoet blaast heeft het album ook een episch tintje en een erg donker timbre. Luister in die optiek vooral naar de afsluiter ‘Before The Storm’ dat een epische atmosfeer heeft die te vergelijken valt met ‘A Dying Wish’ van Anathema. Fans van melodieuze Noordelijke death metal mogen bij deze dan ook eens een kans geven aan een band uit een andere streek dan het voortvarende Scandinavië.
