STEVE GRIMMETT: Personal Crisis

If you were around during the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal in the early eighties, you might remember the band GRIM REAPER. Not the most famous of the bunch, and not the best, but definitely an outfit that put a stamp on British metal. The band’s singer, Steve Grimmett, went on to front the thrash metal band ONSLAUGHT and the more melodic LIONSHEART. Now the man is back with his very first solo album, “Personal Crisisâ€, on which he is backed up by his former LIONSHEART bandmate Ian Nash, Ritchie Walker (bass) and PAUL DI’ANNO drummer Pete Newdeck.
First thing you notice is that this veteran sounds surprisingly modern. ‘Karma’, ‘Wait For Ever’, ‘Promises’ and ‘Enemy’ are just some of the titles that sound very much up-to-date, in the most positive sense. This is some excellent melodic metal. Other songs are more in line with traditional metal (i.e. the MAIDEN-like ‘Wrath Of The Ripper’).
As for Grimmett, I really like his singing more than in the old days. His voice sounds fuller and more mature and he doesn’t scream that much anymore, which is definitely a plus. Excellent performance.
Not all songs are of the same high quality, but I’m sure there’s more than enough excellent stuff on this to make any melodic metal fan happy.

Als je erbij was tijdens de New Wave Of British Heavy Metal in de vroege jaren ’80, herinner je je wellicht de band GRIM REAPER nog. Niet de bekendste van de stal, en niet de beste, maar een groep die absoluut een stempel heeft gedrukt op de Britse metal. De zanger van de band, Steve Grimmett, zong later bij de thrash metal band ONSLAUGHT en het meer melodieuze LIONSHEART. Nu is de man terug met zijn eerste solo-album, “Personal Crisisâ€, waarop bij wordt bijgestaan door zijn vroegere LIONSHEART bandmaat Ian Nash, Ritchie Walker (bass) en PAUL DI’ANNO’s drummer Pete Newdeck.
Het eerste dat opvalt is dat deze veteraan opvallend modern klinkt. ‘Karma’, ‘Wait For Ever’, ‘Promises’ en ‘Enemy’ zijn slechts enkele van de nummers die erg up-to-date klinken, in de meest positieve zin. Dit is uitstekende melodieuze metal. Andere nummers klinken dan weer heel wat traditioneler (o.a. het MAIDEN-achtige ‘Wrath Of The Ripper').
Wat Grimmett zelf betreft, ik waardeer zijn zang veel meer dan vroeger. Hij klinkt voller en meer matuur en hij schreeuwt minder, wat zeker een pluspunt is. Uitstekende prestatie.
Niet alle nummers zijn van dezelfde hoge kwaliteit, maar ik ben er zeker van dat er meer dan genoeg moois op de plaat staat om elke melodieuze metalfan tevreden te stellen.
