NECRODEATH: Draculea

I was already very delighted with ‘100% Hell’, the previous Necrodeath album, but on ‘Draculea’ they even come up with something more inventive. With one more time a new guitarist (Maxx – but the former one, Pier Gonella did the recordings in the studio) one of the oldest Italian thrash/black metal bands accepted the challenge to write a proper concept. Of course the theme of Vlad Tepes alias Dracula is not new for an extreme metal band, but it resulted in an engrossing album with a very obscure atmosphere. It is not focused on maximum velocity, but on depth with some positive surprises. I wonder if this will appeal to the regular thrash/black fan, for even I am surprised about the medium paced approach and the small amount of heavy-ramming tracks on ‘Draculea’.
‘V.T. 1431’ is a song to create the right atmosphere. It is a spooky start with acoustic guitars and later on electric compelling soloing to guide the spoken introduction. In ‘Smell Of Blood’ they cut loose with rough medium-paced thrash in the vein of Slayer. ‘Party In Tirqoviste’ has an exciting texture with acoustic guitars and whisperings, but then ponderous doom riffs echo through the living room. The spirit of Alice Cooper and King Diamond surrounds us. ‘Fragments Of Insanity’ is a straight mauling track, as in days of old. Of course it is, since this is a remake of a song from 1989.
On the previous album Cronos (Venom) sang on one track, on this album one can find a tight version of the Venom song ‘Countless Bathory’ as homage. Another daring yet superior song is ‘The Golden Cup’ in which didgeridoo and special percussion is integrated between them heavy thrash riffs. But hear the marvellous inciting guitar solo! Top notch class! ‘Impaler Prince’ is a fast powerful up tempo song like we all know Necrodeath. Closing track is ‘V.T. 1476’, a composition with an exceptional charm by its ethnic percussion and ambient influences. A magnificent melodic guitar solo follows and female vocals (of Lady Godiva) give it almost a gothic tinge. Just like on the previous album, guitar skills deserve a special mention. This is an outstanding album! Necrodeath really surprised me with their prowess and innovative approach.

Ik was al zeer te spreken over ‘100% Hell’, het vorige album van Necrodeath, maar op ‘Draculea’ komen ze nog inventiever uit de bus. Met weer een andere gitarist (Maxx – maar Pier Gonella deed de opnamen in de studio) waagde één van de oudste Italiaanse thrash/black bands zich aan het schrijven van een heus concept. Natuurlijk is het onderwerp – Vlad Tepes alias Dracula – niet nieuw voor een extreme metal band, maar het resulteert wel in een boeiend album waar men een heel donkere sfeer creëert. En zich niet focust op snelheid, maar op diepgang met enkele behoorlijke verrassingen. Ben benieuwd of die in de smaak van de reguliere thrash/death fan zullen vallen, want zelfs ik ben verbaasd over het slepende tempo en het schaarse aantal rammende nummers op ‘Draculea’.
‘V.T. 1431’ is een nummer om de juiste toon te zetten. Een spookachtig begin met akoestische gitaren en later elektrisch slepend soleerwerk dat de gesproken introductie omkranst. In ‘Smell Of Blood’ is men dan goed op dreef met ruwe mediumtempo thrash naar Slayer model. ‘Party In Tirqoviste’ kent een spannende opbouw met akoestische gitaren en gefluister, maar dan daveren zware doom riffs de woonkamer binnen. De geest van Alice Cooper en King Diamond waart hier rond! ‘Fragments Of Insanity’ is een doorramnummer, als vanouds. Vanzelfsprekend, want het is een remake van deze song uit 1989.
Op het vorige album zong Cronos (Venom) mee in één nummer, op dit album vinden we een strakke uitvoering van het Venom nummer ‘Countless Bathory’ als eerbetoon. Een ander gedurfd maar superieur nummer is ‘The Golden Cup’ waar een didgeridoo en aparte percussie geïntegreerd worden tussen de thrash riffs, maar geniet ook van die spetterende gitaarsolo! Klasse! ‘Impaler Prince’ is een vlug krachtig uptempo nummer zoals we Necrodeath kennen. Als besluit is er ‘V.T. 1476’, een compositie die zijn aparte charme heeft door uitheemse percussie en wat ambient invloeden. Er volgt een prachtige melodieuze gitaarsolo en vrouwelijke vocalen (van Lady Godiva) geven het bijna een gothic tintje. Net zoals op het vorige album verdient het prachtige gitaarwerk een aparte vermelding. Dit is een top album! Necrodeath heeft me echt versteld doen staan door hun gedurfde en innovatieve aanpak.
