GORMATHON: Following The Beast

The Gormathon is, according to the band, a hybrid creature with characteristics of both angels and fighters. This aforementioned band is composed out of experienced musicians having played in multiple bands and of which, nowadays, a few play in Overload as well.
This debut harbors melodic Swedish death in accessible songs in which grunt, clean vocals and some screams alternate. Sometimes close to the Gothenborg sound, Gormathon is usually less rough, fast and striking, especially during the first half of this disc. Even if this might sound a bit pejorative , the result can be quite catchy ( ‘Land Of The Lost’ with a fine solo, ‘Hellbender’ or the faster ‘In Benevolence’ ). We also have the epic ‘Break The Chains’, while in ‘Warrior’ the double bass helps to fasten the pace. ‘Remember’ is arguably the masterpiece of this album: from slow, brooding it grows into a tasteful epic, colored by sober, though efficient guitar solo. Goose bumps in ‘Absence Of Trust’s melancholic piano intro, which theme emerges now and then throughout the rather fast track. Finally, the pearl ‘Into Oblivion’ is hidden amongst the bonus tracks !
In short, strong songs in a diversified death/heavy casing.

De Gormathon is, volgens de band, een hybride wezen met eigenschappen van engel en vechter. Die band is samengesteld uit ervaren rotten die al in menige band vertoefden en waarvan enkelen, dezer dagen, ook in Overload spelen.
Op dit debuut vinden we melodieuze Zweedse death in toegankelijke nummers waarin grunt, gewone zang en wat screams alterneren. Soms deed dit me wat denken aan Gothenborg, maar bij Gormathon gaat het er doorgaans minder heftig, snel en snedig aan toe, vooral tijdens de eerste helft van deze schijf. Al klinkt het wat pejoratief, het resulteert wel in catchy songs ( ‘Land Of The Lost’ met lekkere solo, ‘Hellbender’ of het snellere ‘In Benevolence’ ). Dan is er ook het epische ‘Break The Chains’, en in ‘Warrior’ krikt de dubbele bas het tempo op. ‘Remember’ is m.i. het meesterwerkje op dit album: traag, broedend komt het op gang en wordt smaakvol episch, verlucht door sobere, doch efficiënte gitaarsolo. Kippenvel bij de melancholische piano intro van ‘Absence Of Trust’, waarvan het motiefje nu en dan terug opduikt doorheen de eerder snelle song. Let op, één van de bonus tracks, ‘Into Oblivion’, is verdorie het beste wat Gormathon hier te bieden heeft.
Kortweg, sterke nummers in diverse death/heavy verpakking!
