THE BURNING: Storm The Walls

What a short record, I think, when I put ‘Storm The Walls’ of The Burning in my CD-player. But during this half an hour a wall of energy is coming your way. One just gets blown away by the ultimate density. Besides, in the thrash/death genre it is usual to write compact songs anyway.
This is the debut of a young Danish band. They play a brutal mixture of death and thrash metal with lashings of groove. This will surely appeal to the youngsters! I can see the moshpits all over the place! Just like the title ‘Storm The Walls’ suggests, they swallow the bait in all of the twelve tracks. Vocals of Johnny Haven are varying from low death grunts to gravel-throated vocals with a metal/hardcore edge. Guitar skills are vigorous, even if the band opted for only one guitar player. That’s why there is more room for the bass runs of Thue Moeller. Every song is a hand-grenade brimming with unbridled energy.
Maybe you expect that they recruited Tue Madsen for the final mix; but no, the crystal clear production is the merit of that other Danish famous producer: Jacob Hansen. He worked earlier with bands like Mercenary, Volbeat and Hatesphere. It is no wonder that they came out with a top notch product that will establish the name of The Burning as seminal newcomer. Wat een korte plaat, bedenk ik, wanneer ik ‘Storm The Walls’ van The Burning in de cd-lader stop. Maar tijdens dit ruime half uur komt er zulk een energie los, dat je zowaar omvergeblazen wordt en in het thrash/death genre is het wel meer gebruikelijk om compacte nummers te schrijven.
Dit is het debuut van een jonge Deense band. Ze spelen een brutale mix van death en thrash metal met veel groove. Dit zal zeker aanslaan bij de jonge meute! Ik zie de moshpits al zo voor mij! Net zoals de titel ‘Storm The Walls’ aangeeft trekt men twaalf nummers lang hard van leer. De zang van Johnny Haven gaat van lage death grunts tot gruizende vocalen met een metal/hardcore randje. Het gitaarwerk is spetterend, ook al koos de band bewust voor slechts één gitarist. Volgens hen is er daardoor meer ruimte voor het baswerk van Thue Moeller. Elk nummer is een granaataanval vol tomeloze energie.
Misschien verwacht je dat dit alles in handen gegeven is van Tue Madsen voor de mix; maar neen, de glasheldere productie is het werk van die andere befaamde Deen: Jacob Hansen, maar die werkte dan ook al eender met bands als Mercenary, Volbeat en Hatesphere. Het ligt dus voor de hand dat men naar buiten kwam met een degelijk product dat de naam van The Burning als beloftevolle nieuwkomer vestigt.
