This is the first time in six years that The Prince of Darkness has released an album containing new songs. Being a big Ozzy fan, that’s very exciting. How will the album sound? Can Ozzy still do it? If you take a close look at his solo reportoires, then you’ll discover that all of those albums were equally good. So you can imagine that the expectations are very high…
‘Black Rain’ begins strongly with the decent, contemporary sounding “Not Going Awayâ€. The musicians weave their usual ‘Ozzy’ song, which contains those heavy riffs and a very modern sound. “I Don’t Wanna Stop†is the first single. The fans are treated to some awesome guitar work by Zakk Wylde and to a very catchy chorus. The title track, “Black Rainâ€, is an Ozzy reaction to the continuing turmoil of war on earth. You’ll hear some very beautiful effects in this song. The semi ballad, “Lay Your World on Meâ€, is based on a drum and bass loop that continues through the whole song. This can be called an Osbourne song as well, thanks to Ozzy’s wonderful melodies. He also has a view on climate change and that’s certainly no surprise. Ozzy ventilates his own version of “An Inconvenient Truth†while some amazing guitar playing keeps the excitement at a steady pace. Just listen to the Eastern influences and the Porcupine sounding piano work during the bridge of this song. “The Almighty Dollar†is based on the many earthly miseries (as Ozzy notices here) and that’s an understatement! “11 Silver†is an agitated, upbeat number that can't be compared to the rest of the songs. Zakk makes a worthy contribution to this song with some well times and sublime guitar work. A not too obvious “Civilize the Universe†is completely overshadowed by his ballads because they have always been something to look forward to over the years. These strong and sensitive songs have always contained a message and are gems that know how to touch and excite the listener in all their simplicity. Remember “Dreamer†(Down to Earth-2001), “Mama, I’m Coming Home†(No More Tears-1991) and “Revelation†(Mother Earth) (Blizzard of Oz-1980), just to name a few. The ballad this time is called “Here For Youâ€. It’s one of the most sensitive and moving moments on the CD so now is the time to hold up your lighters. The super heavy riffs on “Countdown’s Begun†jerks us back down to earth and our daily confrontations. The last song, “Trap Doorâ€, is propelled by an awesome bass loop and the drums sound a bit like some old Black Sabbath stuff.
Ozzy has done it again. He’s written some solid, contemporary songs, accompanied by beautiful arrangements and great technical sounds. Ozzy’s typical voice and Zakk Wylde’s amazing guitar sounds have remained steadfast after all these years. The Prince of darkness lives up to his name and is lonely at the top!

The Prince of Darkness heeft voor het eerst in zes jaar een album met nieuwe songs uitgebracht. Als grote Ozzy fan is dat altijd even spannend. Hoe zal het album klinken? Kan Ozzy het nog steeds? Als je even zijn solorepertoire onder de loep neemt kom je al gauw tot de bevinding dat er niet één minder goed album werd gemaakt. De verwachtingen zijn dus erg hoog gespannen, kan je stellen…
‘Black Rain’ gaat meteen erg sterk van start met een redelijk eigentijds klinkend “Not Going Awayâ€. Met als basis een typische ‘Ozzy’ song spinnen de muzikanten een sound, die voorzien is van stevige riffs en erg modern klinkt. Niet voor niets is “I Don’t Wanna Stop†de eerste single. Vanwege het hoge meezinggehalte van het refrein en in het bijzonder het snedige gitaarspel van Zakk Wylde wordt de fan getrakteerd op het eerste geschenk uit de ‘Zakk van Ozzy’. Titeltrack “Black Rain†is een Ozzy reactie op de blijvende oorlogsconflicten op deze aardbol. Weerom zitten er heel mooie auditieve effecten in het nummer verweven. De semi-ballad “Lay Your World On Me†is gebaseerd op een ‘drum ‘n’ bass loop’ dat heel het nummer wordt aangehouden. Doormiddel van de mooie melodieën van Ozzy’s zanglijn wordt dit toch ook weer een Osbourne song. Het kon niet uitblijven, ook Ozzy heeft zijn visie over de klimaatsveranderingen. Uitmuntend gitaarwerk houdt de spanning in dit nummer op niveau terwijl Ozzy zijn versie van “An Inconvenient Truth†ventileert. Let vooral op de Oosterse invloeden en het Porcupine Tree achtige pianowerk in het bruggedeelte van deze song. Dat “The Almighty Dollar†aan de basis ligt van heel wat aardse miserie, zoals Ozzy hier terecht opmerkt, is een understatement! “11 Silver†is een enerverend up-tempo nummer dat in vergelijking met de rest van de songs verbleekt. Gelukkig weet Zakk tijdig in te grijpen via subliem gesoleer om zo toch iets van waarde in dit nummer te steken. Het niet zo erg in het oog springende “Civilize The Universe†wordt volledig overschaduwd door de ballade van dienst. Die ballads van Ozzy zijn in de loop der jaren altijd al iets geweest om naar uit te kijken. De sterke gevoelige songs, steeds voorzien van een boodschap, zijn één voor één parels die, in al hun eenvoud, de luisteraar wisten te boeien en de juiste snaar raken. Denken we maar aan “Dreamer†(Down To Earth - 2001), “Mama, I’m Coming Home†(No More Tears – 1991) of “Revelation (Mother Earth) (Blizzard Of Ozz – 1980) om maar enkele te noemen. Dit keer heet de ballade dus “Here For Youâ€. Laat de aanstekers al maar aanrukken voor waarschijnlijk het meest gevoelige moment van zijn optreden binnenkort. De loodzware riffs van “Countdown’s Begun†trekken ons terug naar de aardse werkelijkheid waar we dagdagelijks mee geconfronteerd worden. Met de erg vette bas-loop die “Trap Door†stuwt wordt meteen het laatste nummer ingezet. De drums in deze song hebben wat weg van oud Black Sabbath werk.
Het is Ozzy weerom gelukt om een handvol ijzersterke songs te schrijven die, voorzien van erg mooie arrangementen en geluidstechnische hoogstandjes, eigentijds worden opgesmukt. Ozzy’s typerende stem- en Zakk Wylde’s megabangelijk gitaargeluid hebben nog steeds niets ingeboet in de loop der jaren. De Prins Der Duisternis blijft zijn naam waardig en op éénzame hoogte musiceren!
