PAGANS MIND: God's Equation

Fortunately the excellent ‘Enigmatic : Calling’ did not stay unnoticed and after its release in 2005 the Norwegian band could achieve some gigs at well-known festivals. I mainly remember their vigorous concert at ProgPower 2005, but also the huge Sweden Rock Festival, Rjukan Rock and Norwegian Rock Festival were willing to engage this innovative progressive metal band at their happenings. On top of this the album hit the Norwegian charts, followed by an English headliner tour. Seems like a dream come true? Well, just listen to their new effort ‘God’s Equation’!
It gives us hope that there seems to be room and recognition for a band such as Pagan’s Mind on this planet. Encouraged by so many positive reactions, the band started working at a successor. This time they engaged Stefan Glaumann to give an extra dimension to their music. This producer is famous for his works with Rammstein and I am not really enthusiastic when reading this. Of course this is craftwork, but especially during the first spins I missed the fervent glow of their former albums. The mechanical over the top production in an ultra modern style focuses on spectacular skills. But anyway, it does not mean that ‘God’s Equator’ would be minor to previous works, it is only a matter of taste.
With a guitarist like Jörn Viggo Lofstad who can regularly be signed in the neighbourhood of eminent voice Jorn Lande, nothing can go wrong. Next to this Pagan’s Mind does have a marvellous vocalist too. Nils K. Rue surpasses Geoff Tate in some of the songs and I can only applaud this. Hear those riffs bursting out during the title track, haunted by mauling drums. Like a horde a young wolves with progressive skilfulness they know how to find the perfect balance between hectic parts and emotional vocals or graceful guitar soloing. For ‘Atomic Firelight’ they have shot a videoclip and it appears to be one of the most modern sounding tracks. Samplers and distorted vocals give it an industrial tinge. And what might we think about the Bowie cover ‘Hallo Spaceboy’? In the latter part Nils even comes close to the decadent timbre of the master, though this is a much heavier version with some ‘The Jean Genie’ heavy riffs. In general choruses and guitar skills serve some tranquillity and mainstay in the sometimes hectic songs. In ‘Painted Skies’ keyboards soloing is featured. With the extensive ‘Osiris’ Triumphant Return’ Pagan’s Mind winds up its fourth studio album in a magnificent way. They are ready and willing to conquer some new fans all over the world. I truly hope they convince everybody with eminent songs like this!
The limited version includes a bonus disc (10000 copies) featuring live and demo recordings, as well as the videoclip of ‘Atomic Fireflight’. Definitely worth to extend your one hour music trip with Pagan’s Mind!

Gelukkig bleef het uitstekende ‘Enigmatic : Calling’ niet onopgemerkt en na de release in 2005 kon de Noorse band op verschillende bekende festivals spelen. Ik herinner me vooral hun energiek concert op ProgPower 2005, maar ook het immense Sweden Rock Festival, Rjukan Rock en Norwegian Rock Festival waren bereid om de bezoekers met deze innovatieve progressieve metal band te laten kennismaken. Tot hun eigen verbazing stormde het album de Noorse hitlijsten binnen, met een Engelse headliner tour als gevolg. Dit lijkt te mooi om waar te zijn? Luister dan naar ‘God’s Equation’!
Het geeft een mens hoop dat er plaats is in deze wereld om een band als Pagan’s Mind op waarde te schatten. Aangemoedigd door zoveel positieve reacties, begon de band dan ook te werken aan een opvolger. Ditmaal nam men Stefan Glaumann onder de arm om de geschreven muziek een extra dimensie te geven. Deze producer is bekend van Rammstein en ik ben niet laaiend enthousiast wanneer ik dit lees. Het is natuurlijk vakwerk, maar vooral bij de eerste luisterbeurten miste ik de warme gloed die over vorige albums heerste. De mechanische over-the-top productie die ultra modern is, laat één en ander te spectaculair klinken. Maar goed, dit wilt zeker niet zeggen dat ‘God’s Equator’ minder is dan zijn voorganger; het is enkel een kwestie van smaak.
Met een gitarist als Jörn Viggo Lofstad die ook in de buurt van de man met de stem Jorn Lande te vinden is, kan er weinig mis gaan. Bovendien heeft Pagan’s Mind zelf ook een uitstekende zanger. Nils K. Rue steekt in sommige nummers Geoff Tate naar de kroon, en daar kan ik niets op tegen hebben. Neem nu de riffs die losbarsten in het titelnummer, achterna gezeten door beukend drumwerk. Als een stel jonge honden met progressieve onderlegdheid weet men de balans tussen drukte en emotionele zang of sierlijke gitaarsolo’s perfect te vinden. Voor ‘Atomic Firelight’ is een videoclip gemaakt en dat is één van de erg modern klinkende nummers. Samplers en vervormde stem geven dit zelfs een industrieel tintje. En wat te denken van de Bowie cover ‘Hallo Spaceboy’? Op het einde benadert Nils zelfs het decadente timbre van de meester, al is dit een veel hardere versie waar ‘The Jean Genie’ riffs aangewend worden. In het algemeen brengen de refreinen en het gitaarwerk wat rust en houvast aan in de soms drukke nummers. In ‘Painted Skies’ zijn het de toetsen die op de voorgrond treden. Met het lange ‘Osiris’ Triumphant Return’ sluit Pagan’s Mind knallend zijn vierde studioalbum af en staan ze alweer te popelen om overal ter wereld nieuwe fans te veroveren. Het is hen van harte gegund met zulk sterk materiaal!
De gelimiteerde versie bevat een bonus disc (10.000 kopieën) die live en demo opnamen bevat, alsook de videoclip van ‘Atomic Fireflight’. Zeker de moeite waard om je trip van een uur nog even te laten voortduren!
