SOTO: Inside The Vertigo

Of course we know Jeff Scott Soto from very different projects and bands but this time he has assembled a new band under the SOTO moniker. Besides his own band members, there’s a whole bunch of guest players and co-writers. This record breathes ambition to make something that matters. The sound is huge and the songs are very good but at the same time it all sounds a bit over the top. There’s plenty of energy and enthusiasm and the musicians are top. Soto pushes his voice all the time and combined with the ‘in your face’ production, it’s all a bit too much. This is the kind of record that makes you say ‘wow’ at the beginning, but makes you want to make a break after a couple of songs. The song ‘End Of Days’ just does that and could be one of the majestic pieces of TSO. On most pieces Soto sounds (very) angry and that’s very ‘metal’ of course. So we have mixed feelings about this one but it’s still a tour de force to make such an album. Time will tell.

Uiteraard kennen we Jeff Scott Soto van tal van bands en projecten, maar deze keer heeft hij een heuse nieuwe band gevormd. Hij weet ook nog een heel leger aan topgasten aan te trekken en schreef samen met een hele reeks co-writers aan deze plaat. Alles aan deze SCHIJF ademt de ambitie uit om er een klapper van te maken en dat hoor je alleen al aan de sound. ‘Inside The Vertigo’ heeft een gespannen ‘in your face’ geluid waar je niet naast kunt en dat is nu net het punt: de plaat staat bol van enthousiasme en energie, maar het klinkt allemaal niet iets te geforceerd. Soto zelf zingt op de meeste nummers met een drukkende metalstem en laat dat nu net de stijl zijn waarin we hem het minste graag horen. Dit is het soort plaat waarvan je bij de eerste luisterbeurt een ‘wow’-gevoel krijgt, maar waarvan je na enkele nummers zin krijgt om even een pauze in te lassen. Het hoeft geen betoog dat er op topniveau wordt gespeeld, dat de nummers goed in elkaar zitten en dat de productie dik in orde en zeer hedendaags metal is. Een bijzondere vermelding verdient het nummer ‘End Of Days’ dat zo uit het TSO repertoire lijkt weggeplukt. Enfin, de plaat vervult ons met gemengde gevoelens. Misschien nog eens luisteren.
