THULCANDRA: Ascension Lost

The first two albums of Germany, Munich (Bavaria) based outfit Thulcandra followed rather quick behind each other. In 2010 ’Fallen Angel’s Dominion’ got rave reviews and one year later ’Under A Frozen Sun’ repeated the success. These are melodious black metal albums with a compelling amount of melancholy and a wide range of breaks with acoustic guitars, while the spirit of (Swedish) black/death metal from the nineties was obvious and prominent. For instance Dissection appeared to be one of the main influences of vocalist/guitarist/composer Steffen Kummerer (of Obscura fame) and the twin brothers Tobias (bass) and Sebastian (guitars) Ludwig. Now they took more time to create the third album called ‘Ascension Lost’ and it results in a collection of strong songs with epic flavour without any flaws. Drummer Seraph has been replaced by Erebor (also Secrets Of The Moon) in the meantime, but for the rest the band prefers stability by recording with V. Santura again at the Woodshed Studios and choosing a beautiful painting in mainly blue tints, designed by Necrolord Kristian Wåhlin for the artwork.
The band promptly kicks off with the seven minutes long ‘The First Rebellion’: raucous vocals of Kummerer cleave through the fluent tempo shifts, while inciting up-tempo wizardry also stops for a moment of atmospheric calmness. Meanwhile we can enjoy a salvo of ultimate melodic leads and these are truly one of the most amazing characteristics of the Bavarian band. In ‘Throne Of Will’ and the dark-tinged ‘Deliverance In Sin And Death’ we are again often astonished by these graceful ornaments on a bed of majestic riffs. The band holds the attention easily with short acoustic passages, such as the beginning of the overall merciless ‘Demigod Imprisoned’ and the tremolo featured ‘Interlude’. One can spot fetching groove-laden rhythms in the catchy ‘The Second Fall’, that’s why the music not only brims with heaviness but it also remains accessible. By the use of deep spoken fragments they unfold a mysterious veil over songs like ‘Sorrow Of The One’ and the epic, lengthy title track. Those who have a soft spot for haunting black/death metal of the nineties, do not need to think twice and can buy ‘Ascension Lost’ blindly, but also fans of Keep Of Kalessin or Vreid can find an amazing ally in Thulcandra.

De eerste twee albums van het Duitse (München – Beieren) Thulcandra volgden elkaar in snel tempo op. In 2010 oogstte ’Fallen Angel’s Dominion’ lovende recensies en een jaar later verscheen ’Under A Frozen Sun’. Het zijn melodieuze black metal albums met een meeslepende dosis melancholie en een keur aan breaks met akoestische gitaren, waarbij de geest van (Zweedse) black/death metal uit de jaren negentig sterk aanwezig is. Dissection bijvoorbeeld is één van de grootste invloeden voor zanger/gitarist/componist Steffen Kummerer (ook Obscura) en de tweelingbroers Tobias (bas) en Sebastian (gitaar) Ludwig. Nu heeft men wat meer tijd uitgetrokken om het derde album ‘Ascension Lost’ te creëren, wat resulteert in een verzameling sterke songs zonder zwakke momenten, maar met epische inslag. Drummer Seraph is inmiddels vervangen door Erebor (ook Secrets Of The Moon), maar verder houdt de band van stabiliteit door wederom op te nemen met V. Santura in de Woodshed studio en een prachtig schilderij in overwegend blauwe kleuren te laten ontwerpen door Necrolord Kristian Wåhlin voor het artwork.
Weldra schiet de band los met het meer dan zeven minuten durende ‘The First Rebellion’: ruwe vocalen van Kummerer doorklieven de vlotte tempowisselingen, terwijl we naast voortvarende stukken ook even halt houden tijdens een atmosferische passage. Ondertussen kunnen we genieten van een salvo uiterst melodieuze leads en die zijn toch wel één van de fraaiste karakteristieken van de Beierse band. Ook in ‘Throne Of Will’ en het duistere ‘Deliverance In Sin And Death’ staan we meermaals versteld van deze sierlijke ornamenten op een bedje van majestueuze riffs. De band houdt de aandacht vast met korte akoestische passages, zoals aan het begin van het voor de rest meedogenloze ‘Demigod Imprisoned’ en het door tremolo geleide ‘Interlude’. Er valt een aanstekelijke groove te spotten in het aanstekelijke ‘The Second Fall’, zodat de muziek niet alleen heftig, maar ook toegankelijk blijft. Door het gebruik van diep gesproken passages drapeert men tevens een mysterieuze sluier over songs als ‘Sorrow Of The One’ en het epische, lange titelnummer. Wie toegankelijke black/death metal van de jaren negentig een warm hart toedraagt, hoeft niet te twijfelen om ‘Ascension Lost’ blind aan te schaffen, maar ook fans van Keep Of Kalessin of Vreid hebben een fantastische bondgenoot in Thulcandra.
