INSANITY REIGNS SUPREME: Unorthodox

With average only every six years new work in the shops, Insanity Reigns Supreme surely is a band that takes the time to let their occult compositions grow into ultimate maturity. Thus quality reigns over quantity, that appears to be their device and albums such as ‘Prophecy Of Doom’ and ’Occultus Insanus Damnnatus’ are still silent (?) witnesses of that. Since the Belgian Limburg based doom/death/black metal band celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2015, they decided to do an extra effort. They worked with the same staff as on previous album, but everything is just a bit better. ‘Unorthodox’ was recorded and regaled with a superior production by Andy Classen at the Stage One Studios and the magnificent and multifarious artwork was crafted by Septicflesh’s Seth. Very recognizable and detailed!
The same goes for the music. We never considered Insanity Reigns Supreme a pure doom metal band, even though they preach an occult liturgy where you descend into the deepest dungeons of the soul. Yet the music is only partly interwoven with inertia and mostly shows a proper fury going into crescendo to blastbeats. That’s when the beloved death and black injection enters. Criz James as high priest of this newest ceremony utters rigorous grunts, but he also uses a scream-like variant or declares introspective reveries. A powerful song like ‘Opposer’ reminds me of Novembers Doom, while the spirit of My Dying Bride wanders through the arcane (on one side) and Spartan tight ‘Cursed Be The Faithful’. With the theme of ‘unorthodox’ as guidance – more precisely the opposite forces that try to rule our lives - it leaps to the eye that opening track ‘Ov Fire (omega)’ appears to be the same as the occluding ‘Serpent Ov Fire (alpha)’ minus the female vocals. Thus the male, destructive power in the universe it is, contra the female, constructive force with vocals of Claudia in ‘Serpent Ov Fire’. In ‘Ov Fire’ these are replaced by melodious, slightly graceful leads that are evocative of Mourning Beloveth. However this namedropping is only a hint, since these guys really produce a unique signature sound. With every spin, songs like ‘Throne Of One’ (the declaration ‘I Am’ crowned by heavy riffs is ace!) and the monumental and impressive ‘Torment’ are stunners like fury. In the latter one we have that nice part with drawling slow guitars contra fervent blackened fury, turning into an intense moment of glory. Indeed, that is another feature of this music: it includes something glorious and proud, nay dominant. The last songs start slow, even kind of hesitating, but develop enormous power, even though female vocals pop up from time to time and we also have the serene, short ‘The Calling’ to turn on the pious souls. IRS shows more depth than ever, in a vigorous production and yet all the songs are familiar sounding and fetching after a few spins. That is a true exceptional achievement in doom metal! Congratulations guys!

Met gemiddeld slechts elke zes jaar nieuw werk in de winkel, is Insanity Reigns Supreme een band die de tijd neemt om de occulte composities tot volle wasdom te laten groeien. Kwaliteit boven kwantiteit is dan ook hun motto en albums als ‘Prophecy Of Doom’ en ’Occultus Insanus Damnnatus’ zijn daar nog steeds stille (?) getuigen van. Omdat de Belgische Limburgse doom/death/black metal band in 2015 het vijfentwintigjarige bestaan viert, besloten ze er nog een schepje bovenop te doen. Ze werkten met dezelfde mensen als voor voorgaand album, maar alles is nog net iets beter. ‘Unorthodox’ werd opgenomen en van een superieure productie voorzien door Andy Classen in de Stage One studio en het prachtige en veelomvattende artwork is het werk van Septicflesh’s Seth. Heel herkenbaar en subliem gedetailleerd!
Maar dat is de muziek evenzeer. We hebben Insanity Reigns Supreme nooit als zuivere doom metal band bekeken, al predikt men een occulte liturgie waarbij je diep nederdaalt tot de diepste krochten. De muziek is echter slechts deels doorspekt met inertie en vertoont veelal een pittige furie die aanzwelt tot blastbeats. Enter onze geliefde death en black injectie. Criz James als hogepriester van dit nieuwe sermoen haalt een rigoureuze grunt boven, maar gaat eveneens schreeuwend te keer of komt mijmerend tot inkeer. Een krachtige song als ‘Opposer’ doet me dan ook aan Novembers Doom denken, terwijl de geest van My Dying Bride rondwaart in het enerzijds geheimzinnige, anderzijds Spartaans strakke ‘Cursed Be The Faithful’. Met het thema ‘onorthodox’ als rode draad – meer bepaald de tegenstelling tussen de krachten die ons leven trachten te beheersen - valt het ook op dat opener ‘Ov Fire (omega)’ hetzelfde nummer is als afsluiter ‘Serpent Ov Fire (alfa)’ minus de vrouwelijke zang. De mannelijke, destructieve kracht in het universum is dit contra de vrouwelijke, scheppende kracht met zang van Claudia in ‘Serpent Ov Fire’. Die wordt in ‘Ov Fire’ vervangen door melodieuze, haast sierlijke leads die me aan Mourning Beloveth doen denken. Dit naamdroppen is echter slechts een leidraad, want deze heren produceren een uniek klinkende performance. Met elke luisterbeurt worden songs als ‘Throne Of One’ (de uitspraak ‘I Am’ omkranst door riffs kan tellen) en het monumentale en imposante ‘Torment’ schitterende knallers van jewelste. In dat laatste vormen de slepende gitaren contra vlammende black metal furie een intens moment van glorie. Want dat hoort er ook nog bij: de muziek van IRS heeft iets bezwerend en trots, zelfs dominant. De laatste songs beginnen kalm, zelfs aarzelend, maar ontwikkelen een enorme kracht, zelfs al duikt hier geregeld wat meer vrouwelijke zang op en is er ook nog het serene, korte ‘The Calling’ dat vrome zieltjes mag omturnen. IRS vertoont meer diepgang dan ooit, in een krachtige productie en toch zijn de songs al na enkele luisterbeurten herkenbaar en aanstekelijk. Je moet dit maar doen in doom metal! Proficiat heren!
