ALPHA TIGER: Identity

After ‘Man Or Machine’ (2011) and ‘Beneath The Surface’, this is the third album for his German outfit.
After a pretty redundant intro (sounds of war against those of a stuttering record) we find the tight, rather fast powersong ‘Lady Liberty, with room for break and guitar solo, where Stephan shows he’s a fine shouter. They take us back to the eighties with echoes of Fates Warning and Queensrÿche, well, mainly vocally that is. Maybe a bit too much, since this song is in fact catchier than the single ‘We Won’t Take It Anymore’, but I think they would highlight – logical choice – a song reflecting their own style.
Their compositions are technical, sophisticated and varied: in ‘Long Way Of Redemption‘ they use castanets, piano/Hammond in the power ballad ‘Closer Than Yesterday’ or the special roll of drums in ‘Revolution In Progress’ and for the closing one they kept a choir, piano and alternating moods/speeds to built their longest song. In the digipak version, there’s an extra DVD with an 8 song live set from the Bang Your Head 2013 festival.
In short, heavy yet sophisticated album from a very promising band!

Na ‘Man Or Machine’ (2011) en ‘Beneath The Surface’ is dit het derde album voor deze Duitsers.
Na een vrij overbodige intro (oorlogsgeluiden over die van een haperende plaat) komen we in het strakke, eerder snelle powernummer ‘Lady Liberty’ terecht, met plaats voor break en gitaarsolo, waarin Stephan toont dat hij een prima shouter is. Ze voeren ons terug naar de eighties met echo’s van Fates Warning en Queensrÿche, nou, vooral vocaal dan. Misschien een beetje teveel, want eigenlijk is dit nummer catchier dan de single ‘We Won’t Take It Anymore’, maar ik denk dat ze – logisch- meer hun eigen geluid in de schijnwerpers wilden zetten.
Hun composities zijn technisch, geraffineerd en gevarieerd: in ‘Long Way Of Redemption’ worden zowaar castagnetten gebruikt, piano/Hammond in de power ballad ‘Closer Than Yesterday’ of nog die speciale drumroffel in ‘Revolution In Progress’ en voor de afsluiter hebben ze koor, piano en afwisselende snelheden/stemming in hun langste nummer gestopt. Bij de digipack versie hoort een extra DVD met een 8 songs tellende live set op het Bang Your Head 2013 festival!
Kortom, heavy, doch verfijnd album van een veelbelovende band!
