STEVE ROTHERY: The Ghosts Of Pripyat

Steve Rothery, star guitarist of Marillion, approaches his solo career completely the other way around as usual. Last year in August he released the live registration ’Live In Rome’ with a band and some eminent guests. Six of the seven songs we can find on this first solo album ever, were already played that night. The title ‘The Ghosts Of Pripyat’ refers to a place near the nuclear disaster in Ukraine in 1986. Steve is assisted on this album by the same musicians as in Rome, more particularly Yatim Halimi (bass), Leon Parr on drums and Dave Foster as second guitarist. There is also a keyboard player: Riccardo Romano, the one who mixed the live registration too. Famous guest musicians as Steve Hackett (ex-Genesis) and Steven Wilson play some leads on the album.
Initially I was a bit disappointed that it would be an instrumental album, but the guitar skills of Rothery are so magnificent that the balance spontaneously turns to positive. This is a quiescent flight over breathtaking landscapes that leaves you in awe. Timeless music, perfect to dream away and forget about hectic life and all its worries, while taking a dive into virginal escapism as solace. With a soaring, floating guitar style, closely akin to giants as David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Steve Hackett (Genesis), he masterly builds up emotive guitar solos with a nearly unearthly charm. Very relax, very beautiful and of exceptional class!

Steve Rothery, stergitarist bij Marillion, pakt zijn solocarrière helemaal anders aan dan gebruikelijk. Vorig jaar in augustus bracht hij eerst de live registratie ’Live In Rome’ uit met een band waarin tal van coryfeeën opdoken. Toen werden zes van de zeven songs gespeeld die we nu ook kunnen vinden op zijn eerste soloalbum ooit, genaamd ‘The Ghosts Of Pripyat’. Die naam verwijst naar een plaats nabij de nucleaire ramp in Oekraïne in 1986. Steve wordt hier bijgestaan door dezelfde band als in Rome, bestaande uit Yatim Halimi (bas), Leon Parr op drums en Dave Foster als gitaarkompaan. Er is ook nog een toetsenist aanwezig: Riccardo Romano die de live registratie mixte. Eminente gastmuzikanten als Steve Hackett (ex-Genesis) en Steven Wilson spelen een deuntje mee.
Aanvankelijk was ik een beetje teleurgesteld dat dit een instrumentaal album is, maar het gitaarspel van Rothery is echter zo prachtig dat de balans spontaan positief uitslaat. Dit is een rustige vlucht over adembenemende landschappen met de blik op oneindig. Tijdloze muziek om weg te dromen en het aardse bestaan met al zijn besognes even te vergeten om zo een duik te nemen in een maagdelijk escapisme dat zoet kan smaken. Met een zwevende gitaarstijl, nauw verwant aan groten als David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) en Steve Hackett (Genesis) weet hij emotionele gitaarsolo’s op te bouwen waarbij je een haast onaards genoegen proeft. Erg relax, erg mooi en een klasse apart!
