AN AUTUMN FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN: The Long Goodbye

With ’Everything’ our interest awoke into the shoegaze black metal constellation An Autumn For Crippled Children. This happened to be quite a captivating effort when you were in the mood. At that time I already mentioned that they should write proper songs instead of fluttering soundscapes with ever present black metal screams. Now we are three albums and three years later and we cannot add any other thing. The Dutch band still builds up a kind of wall of fluttering sounds that might have some introspective flavours, intermittent with lively outbursts. They always relish it with monotonous black metal vocals, that is all we can say.
That’s the problem with An Autumn For Crippled Children: the idea of soaring synthesizers as counterpoint of raucous vocals is repeated over and over again. Just add some repetitive guitar leads over and over again and you have the essence of every song. In the end it is quite boring. I truly expected more, finally honesty demands me to conclude that this is really mediocre. The attempts of having some engrossing features are always torpedoed by monotony. That’s not what we expected, is it? Maybe we can mention some similarities with Alcest, but I think they are better. I fear that the snipping black metal screams and the identical structure of the songs finally represent the long goodbye of this band. There’s nothing innovative nor interesting. Thus a true disappointment.

Met ’Everything’ (najaar 2011) was onze interesse in de shoegaze black metal constellatie An Autumn For Crippled Children gewekt. Best een beklijvend werkje wanneer je in de stemming was, zij het dat ik me toen al afvroeg wanneer ze nu eindelijk eens een echt nummer gingen schrijven in plaats van breed uitwaaierende soundscapes waarop black metal screams getorpedeerd waren. We zijn drie albums en ruim drie jaar later en in feite is er weinig anders te melden. De Friese band zet nog steeds een muzikale muur van uitwaaierende klanken neer die je soms tot inkeer brengt, maar ook pittige uitbarstingen vertoont. Daarop plaatst men telkens eentonige black metal vocalen, maar meer gebeurt er niet.
Dat is het probleem met An Autumn For Crippled Children: het idee van zwevende synthesizers als contrapunt tegenover de ruwe vocalen wordt tot in den treuren herhaald. Voeg daar nog wat lillende, uitwaaierende gitaren aan toe en je hebt de essentie van elk nummer. Best saai uiteindelijk. Ik had hier veel meer van verwacht, maar de eerlijkheid gebied me te concluderen dat dit een middelmatige uitgave is. De pogingen tot brede opklaringen worden telkens gefnuikt door monotonie. Zo willen wij het niet, toch? In de verte kan men nog vergelijkingen treffen met Alcest, maar die zijn dan toch beter bezig. Ik vrees dat de bijtende black metal vocalen en de eenzelvigheid van de composities inderdaad het afscheid van deze band verantwoorden. Niks innovatief of interessant. Een zware teleurstelling dus.
