FROSTTIDE: Blood Oath

During the recording process of their first album, ‘Awakening’ (2013), one song was saved and served as base for this second album, which was conceived as a prequel of their debut. So far about the storyline, let’s get into the music.
An intro takes us with keyboard, switching to dark beat on the drums, a bit later complemented with male choir and again keyboard swelling bombastically. This brings us to a mix of aggressive double bass against keyboard before a grunt sets in. A bit further the fast and rather raw somber melodic death is intertwined with male singing and flute, adding a folk touch. This folk element isn’t prominently present in the songs, but gives an extra varnish on top of the melody, the frequent blast beats of drums and the grunt. Before taking off with the epical ‘New Reign‘, with heroic melody and more guitar on the foreground, they provide us with a fragile refuge in the form of ‘Foreshadow’.
Successful mix of beauty and aggression, of melody and violence, of keyboards and drums in a somber folk death scape.

Uit de opnames van hun eerste album, ‘Awakening’ (2013), werd een nummer opzij gehouden, dat als basis diende voor dit tweede album, dat als een prequel van hun debuut opgevat werd. Na deze tip over de verhaallijn, over naar the muziek.
De intro neemt ons mee met keyboard, die overgaat in donker tromgeroffel, even later aangevuld met mannenkoor en opnieuw keyboard om bombastisch aan te zwellen. Dit gaat over in een mix van agressieve double bas tegen keyboard vooraleer een grunt invalt. De snelle en vrij rauwe somber melodieuze death wordt wat verder gelardeerd met mannengezang en fluit, hetgeen een folk inslag geeft. Dat folk element is overigens nergens prominent aanwezig in de nummers, maar zorgt voor een extra toets bovenop de melodie, de geregelde blastbeats van de drum en de grunt. Voordat het episch ‘New Reign‘ ingezet wordt, met heroïsche melodie en grotere inbreng van gitaar, krijgen we nog een frêle rustpunt in de vorm van ‘Foreshadow‘.
Geslaagde mix van schoonheid en agressie, van melodie en geweld, van keyboards en drums in een somber folk death scape.
