SPICE AND THE RJ BAND: The Will

When vocalist Spice left The Spiritual Beggars, it was a doomsday for fans of one of the best stonerrock bands (although I always doubted that term – it was just marvellous vintage rock). Fortunately he soon loomed up in Kayser, a band that released two magnificent records until now ‘Kaiserhof’ (2005) and ‘Frame The World… Hang It On The Wall’ (2006).
Do not worry, the man with the emotional yet raucous voice stays in Kayser (they will hit the stage in our areas as support of Volbeat soon, hurray!) but in addition Spice has announced a new project that he calls his ‘solo band’. He can go in any direction with it, it is not genre orientated. The heavier stuff remains reserved for Kayser, but any other inspiration can be used in this trio, consisting of Spice himself, drummer Bob Ruben (Kayser, The Mushroom River Band) and bassist Johann (once roadie of The Mushroom River Band). Spice does not only sing on this album, but he presents himself as a skilled guitarist as well.
This is an album brimming with emotions. From the very outset until the last note we are regaled with melancholic one-liners of Spice, guitar leads that have their roots in the seventies, yet they display the intensity of the new millennium and standout compositions. Sometimes it has momentum, other times it has an undercurrent of affinity with blues, but it is the embodiment of sensual rock in a cosy bar. From time to time, the songs are relished with any psychedelic overtones, during the long title track even a bit experimental with its vintage keyboards and larger than life screams. ‘The Will’ is everything but a polished album of contemporary shallow society, it is a timeless album; the one we will be listening to in twenty years from now with a heartfelt feeling. The voice and talent of Spice and his musical companions are responsible for that.

Toen zanger Spice The Spiritual Beggars verliet was dit een harde dobber voor de fans van één van de beste stonerrock bands (hoewel ik die term te beperkend vind, het was niets anders dan fantastische vintage rock). Gelukkig dook hij even later op in Kayser die tot hier toe twee uitstekende albums uitbrachten, namelijk ‘Kaiserhof’ (2005) en ‘Frame The World… Hang It On The Wall’ (2006).
Geen nood, de man met de emotionele, ruige stem blijft bij Kayser (ze treden op in maart in het voorprogramma van Volbeat, hoera!) maar daarnaast heeft Spice een project in het leven geroepen dat hij zijn ‘soloband’ noemt. Hiermee kan hij alle kanten uit, het is niet genregebonden. De hardere nummers blijven gereserveerd voor Kayser, maar alle andere inspiratie kan hij kwijt in dit trio dat verder bestaat uit drummer Bob Ruben (Kayser, The Mushroom River Band) en bassist Johann (eens een roadie van The Mushroom River Band). Spice zingt niet alleen op dit album, maar presenteert zich ook als een verdienstelijke gitarist.
Dit is een album vol emoties. Van begin tot einde worden we getrakteerd op de melancholieke oneliners van Spice, gitaarwerk dat zo uit de jaren zeventig stamt maar de intensiteit van het nieuwe millennium etaleert en sterke composities. Het is soms stuwende rock, het heeft een onderhuidse affiniteit met blues, maar het is op en top de verpersoonlijking van sensuele rock in een bruine kroeg. Af en toe met een psychedelisch tintje, in het lange titelnummer zelfs een beetje experimenteel met zijn warme toetsen en door merg en been gaande schreeuwen. ‘The Will’ is nu eens geen glad product van de wegwerpmaatschappij, maar een tijdloos album dat we binnen twintig jaar nog met een warme gloed in ons hart zullen beluisteren. De stem en het talent van Spice en zijn vrienden muzikanten staan daar garant voor.
