HAGL: Lenket Til Livet

Hagl presents us a sure-fire debut album, four year after the foundation in 2011 by musicians who had been active for quite a while in bands like Beastkraft, Endezzma and Vulture. These Norwegians serve their black metal ice-cold, as it should be if coming from the North. Yet they add some signature elements to the rigorous base of the music. In that respect I do not completely agree when they claim to play pure black metal without any progressive or post metal influences.
Sorath has a raspy gravel-throated voice, while Malphas does not only play bass and guitar, but he adds an authentic zest to the songs with Mellotron. Drummer Gheist is not a speed devil who only excels in blastbeats, since most of the songs are mid-paced and rather drawling. That pleases us, since the chunky sound of ‘Askefast’ with its bass runs prominent in the mix, is instantly captivating. Mellotron regales us with a kind of eerie support, more than making you soar or fly. We cannot ignore any dourness in ‘Den Sorte Porten’, while the guitar sound happens to be kind of dissonant from time to time. On the other hand there are loads of magnificent, yet short solos and leads throughout the music. A nice example of that is ‘Fra Kulden Til Flammene’ which begins acoustically. The proclaiming tinge in ‘Helvete Ligger Sa I Lende’ reminds me a bit of A Forest Of Stars at a certain moment. Due to the mostly mid-paced compelling tempo, I thought during ‘Vardøgn’: this is really music that wades through the darkness in a momentous yet ultra heavy way. ‘Lenket Til Livet’ is a meritorious album that might appeal to pure black metal fans, but also to those who look for some extra depth in their harshness. Recorded at the Gravlung studios and regaled with a greasy mix by L.F.F.

Hagl presenteert ons een prima debuutalbum nadat de band in 2011 is opgericht door muzikanten die allemaal al geruime tijd actief waren in bands als Beastkraft, Endezzma en Vulture. De Noren serveren hun black metal ijskoud, zoals het hoort vanuit het Hoge Noorden, maar toch voegen zij aan die rigoureuze basis genoeg eigenheid toe. In die optiek ben ik het niet helemaal eens met de bewering dat Hagl’s black metal gespeend is van progressieve en allerlei post invloeden.
Sorath heeft een rasperig stemgeluid, terwijl Malphas niet alleen gitaar en bas speelt, maar een authentieke stempel op de songs drukt met mellotron. Drummer Gheist is geen snelheidsduivel die enkel blastbeats hanteert, want de meeste songs zijn slepend en mediumtempo. Dat bevalt ons, want het drassige geluid van ‘Askefast’ met een prominente bas in de mix is meteen beklijvend. Mellotron zorgt eerder voor een griezelige ondersteuning dan dat zij je vleugels geeft. Enige stugheid kunnen we niet ontkennen in ‘Den Sorte Porten’, terwijl het gitaargeluid soms enigszins dissonant is. Anderzijds zijn er veel prachtige, maar korte solo’s. Een mooi voorbeeld is ‘Fra Kulden Til Flammene’ dat akoestisch aanvangt. De verkondigende trend in ‘Helvete Ligger Sa I Lende’ doet me op een bepaald moment aan A Forest Of Stars denken. Door het veelal slepende tempo dacht ik bij ‘Vardøgn’ dat dit echt muziek is die doorheen de duisternis waadt op een statige, maar beenharde manier. ‘Lenket Til Livet’ is een puik album dat kans maakt bij zowel pure blackies als bij zij die wat extra diepgang zoeken. Opgenomen in de Gravlung studio en voorzien van een vette mix door L.F.F.
