WARDENCLYFFE: Control All Delete

With quondam members of The Doomsday Cult and Griftegård, Wardenclyffe was founded in 2011 and they instantly caused serious fuzz (demo of the month in Rock Hard July 2013) with their first recordings, the EP ‘Ordo Ab Chao’. This one was presented in a special way as a soundtrack for the end thesis of the at that time graduating student Jacob Nordangard (vocals, guitars). At the same time we like to refer to the general themes of the lyrics of Wardenclyffe: science, history, occultism, humanism and cybernetics. Thus, even though this is doom metal (with any incidentally grunts representing the death metal element), they do not focus on misery only.
The debut album ‘Control All Delete’ was recently released by Ván Records. It stands for a proper amount of traditional doom metal and retro hard rock. ‘The World Sensorium pt. 1’ is a magnificent guitar intro; by the way Thomas Sabbathi from Year Of The Goat adds some beautiful leads to this album. But naturally ponderous riffs are the foundation of the songs, mostly ornamented with delicious guitar soloing. Vocals of Jacob are mostly clean, a bit Ozzy stylized, but a song like ‘Orcadian Dream’ reminds me for some reason of The Guess Who a bit (or broader: the energetic hard rock of the seventies). The enormously heavy ‘Everlearning – Neverknowing’ (with Mellotron addition) includes any spoken quotes, but the vocals are juicy and a bit creepy. ‘Macroshift’ as longest track, is built up in a strong manner: that splashing murky sound that returns a few times and the accelerations with solos can surely charm us and here we have some more raucous vocals (semi-grunts) as well. A certain roughness is kept alive, although the music cannot be called innovative or exceptional emotive. Yet it has a kind of conjuring vibe, creating loads of atmosphere and that’s what doom/death metal is about, isn’t it?

Met ex-leden van The Doomsday Cult en Griftegård werd Wardenclyffe in 2011 opgericht en wekte ruime interesse (demo maand juli 2013 Rock Hard) met hun eerste opnamen, de ep ‘Ordo Ab Chao’. Deze werd dan ook op een speciale manier gepresenteerd als de soundtrack bij de eindthesis van de toen afstuderende Jacob Nordangard (zang, gitaar). We verwijzen meteen ook naar de algemene thema’s in de teksten van Wardenclyffe: wetenschap, geschiedenis, occultisme, humanisme en cybernetics. Ook al is dit doom metal (met een sporadische grunt als death metal element), men focust zich dus niet enkel op het wentelen in miserie.
Het debuutalbum ‘Control All Delete’ werd onlangs door Ván Records uitgebracht en dat bevat een stevige portie traditionele doom metal en retro hardrock. ‘The World Sensorium pt. 1’ is een prachtig gitaarintro, Thomas Sabbathi van Year Of The Goat voegt trouwens wat mooie leads toe op dit album. Natuurlijk vormen zware riffs de basis van de songs, veelal geornamenteerd met fraaie gitaarsolo’s. De zang van Jacob is helder, een beetje Ozzy achtig, maar een song als ‘Orcadian Dream’ doet me op onverklaarbare wijze ook een beetje aan The Guess Who denken (of breder: de pittige hardrock der jaren zeventig). Het daverend zware ‘Everlearning – Neverknowing’ (met mellotron bijdrage) last enige gesproken citaten in, maar de zang is soms gluiperig en griezelig. ‘Macroshift’ als langste song is sterk opgebouwd: dat spatterend zompig geluid dat telkens wederkeert en de acceleraties met solo’s kunnen ons zeker bekoren en hier komen ook wat ruwere vocalen (semigrunts) in voor. Men behoudt een zekere ruwheid, al is de muziek ook zeker niet vernieuwend of uitzonderlijk emotioneel. Wel bezwerend en stemming creërend en daar gaat het ten slotte om in doom/death metal.
