ARSTIDIR LIFSINS: Aldafodr Ok Munka Drottinn

Arstidir Lifsins was founded in 2008 and is made up of two Germans and one Icelandic guy: this happens to be the initiative of Stefan (guitars, bass, compositions), Marsel of Helrunar (vocals, narrator) and Arni (drums, violin, cello). All together they do the often popping up male choirs that always sound severe, momentous and solemn. Some guest musicians take care of supplementary strings and keyboards, even some lonesome horns. Earlier they released two underground albums, but now they are ready for an international première, in a production of Markus ‘Schwadorf’ Stock of Empyrium and The Vision Bleak fame in his Studio E, a man that always seems to be involved in inventive, groundbreaking music.
On a bed of snappish, raucous black metal this collective offers us lengthy compositions with undoubtedly loads of wisdom, but the mix of old Norse/Icelandic language still sounds as a parade of sounds that support the musical structures to us. Nevertheless, the entire sound palette happens to be a captivating amalgamation that will fascinate every listener with an open mind, musically as well as vocal-wise. ‘Aldafoðr Ok Munka Dróttinn’ (old Icelandic for Oðinn and the God of the Monks) is a double album with more than eighty minutes music. I will not mention titles, since it is recommended to undergo this as a whole on your system. Only then you will be flabbergasted by the severe, momentous male choirs, the narrative fragments only supported by acoustic guitars, the graceful violin and cello ornaments and the matchless contrast with the rough eruptions with impressive black metal screams and its fervent guitar foundation. Seldom we have heard it as authentic as this, while keeping the attention of (black) metal aficionados. The almost spiritual experience will surely include some elements of Ãsatrú culture, but next month we are going to have an in-depth conversation about that with founding member Stefan. Nevertheless a German guy, but with the intentionl to found an Icelandic project. As you see… where there is a will there is a way. And with Marsel, once teacher of old Norse, they have the perfect match, together with a true Icelander Arni. Thanks to these progressive souls! This is not your usual metal record, but a true immersing into the windy raucousness of the land of ice and fire, as well as a beneficent bath in this, for us eccentric, culture.

Arstidir Lifsins werd in 2008 opgericht en bestaat uit twee Duitsers en een IJslander: dit is het initiatief van Stefan (gitaar, bas, composities), Marsel van Helrunar (zang, verteller) en Arni (drums, viool, cello). Allen samen zorgen ze voor de veel opduikende mannelijke koren die telkens erg ernstig en gewichtig klinken. Enkele gastmuzikanten zorgen voor supplementaire strijkers en keyboards, zelfs een eenzame toeter (horns). Eerder brachten ze op kleine schaal twee albums uit, nu zijn ze klaar voor de internationale doop, in een productie van Markus ‘Schwadorf’ Stock van Empyrium en The Vision Bleak in zijn Studio E, een man die altijd betrokken is bij inventieve, grensverleggende muziek.
Op een bedje van snibbige, ruwe black metal biedt het gezelschap ons langgerekte composities met ongetwijfeld veel wijsheid, maar de mix van old Norse/IJslands klinkt voor ons nog steeds als een klankenparade die enkel de muzikale structuren ondersteunt. Dat neemt niet weg dat het geheel een beklijvend amalgaam van klanken is, instrumentaal zowel als vocaal dat elke luisteraar met een open geest zal fascineren. ‘Aldafoðr Ok Munka Dróttinn’ (oud IJslands voor Oðinn and the God of the Monks) is een dubbelalbum met meer dan tachtig minuten muziek. Ik ga geen titels vermelden, omdat het aan te raden is om dit als geheel op je systeem los te laten. Enkel dan zal je in de ban komen van de ernstige, gewichtige mannelijke koren, de narratieve fragmenten enkel aangezet door akoestische gitaar, de fraaie viool en cello ornamenten en het weergaloze contrast met de ruwe uitbarstingen met indrukwekkende black metal screams en zijn vurig gitaarfundament. Zelden hoorden we het zo authentiek, met de aandacht vast te houden van (black) metal fans. De bijna spirituele belevenis zal vast wel elementen van de Ãsatrú cultuur in zich dragen, maar daar gaan we volgende maand eens lekker over doorbomen met oprichter Stefan, nochtans een Duitser, maar begeesterd om een IJslands project op te richten. Zoals je ziet… waar een wil is, is een weg. En met Marsel, leraar in ‘old Norse’ geweest, heeft hij een perfecte match, samen met de echte IJslander Arni. Dank aan deze vooruitstrevende geesten! Dit is geen gewone metalplaat, maar een onderdompeling in de winderige ruwheid van het land van ijs en vuur, alsook een weldadig bad in die, voor ons excentrieke, cultuur.
