THE NEAL MORSE BAND: The Grand Experiment

Does Neal Morse ever sleep? Just look at his discography and you will understand my wonderings. But also with bands such as Transatlantic and Flying Colors he happened to be quite busy in the studio and on the road in 2014. In addition he organized his own two days long Morsefest last year in November, performing integral versions of ‘One’ and the ‘Testimony’ albums. Drummer Mike Portnoy appears to be a rather constant help to assist our devoted musician. On this album we hear guitarist Eric Gillette, bassist Randy George and keyboardist Bill Hubauer as well.
Some months ago, Neal Morse released ‘Songs From November’, a contemplative singer-songwriter album, recorded in between all his work in the studio and live for Transatlantic. In comparison with that introvert document, my first reaction on ‘The Grand Experiment’ is: Neal Morse rocks again! Yet the ten minutes long ‘Following The Call’ opens with smooth gospel alike chants, but soon it turns into a party of heavy riffs and authentic organ sounds. The typical prog structures are relished with virtuoso refined guitar solos. The mid-paced smooth rocking ‘The Grand Experiment’ includes any weird passages, but it is not really experimental. Yet I prefer the sweet CSN&Y harmony vocals of the beautiful acoustic ‘Waterfall’. That is a calm song that could have been on ‘Songs From November’. ‘Agenda’ creates a funny impression of the current hectic society and this parody sounds a bit mechanic. Beatles influences leap to the eye and actually they are frequent in the works of Neal Morse. However, the stunner of the album is the twenty-six minutes long ‘Alive Again’ that blends all ingredients of proper prog rock into one grand, tasty stew. Inclusive thoughtful passages, restless progressive avant-gardism, soaring beauty and playful rhythms, this offers all the fans might expect from Sir Morse. Thus proggies can start a new adventure into the labyrinth of intricacies of the master.

Slaapt Neal Morse ooit? Bekijk zijn discografie en je begrijpt mijn verwondering omtrent dit feit. Maar ook met bands als Transatlantic en Flying Colors was hij in 2014 druk in de weer en op pad. Bovendien organiseerde hij ook nog zijn tweedaagse Morsefest vorig jaar in november om de integrale versies van ‘One’ en de ‘Testimony’ albums uit te voeren. Drummer Mike Portnoy blijkt daarbij een vrij constante hulp om onze devote muzikant bij te staan. Op dit album horen we ook nog gitarist Eric Gillette, bassist Randy George en toetsenist Bill Hubauer.
Enkele maanden terug bracht Morse ‘Songs From November’ uit, een beschouwend singer-songwriter album, opgenomen tussen al zijn werk in de studio en live voor Transatlantic. In vergelijking met dit ingetogen document is mijn eerste reactie over ‘The Grand Experiment’: Neal Morse rockt terug! Nochtans vangt het tien minuten durende ‘Following The Call’ aan met gladde gospelachtige gezangen, maar weldra wordt het een feest van stotende riffs en authentieke orgelklanken. De typische progstructuren worden verfraaid door virtuoze verfijnde gitaarsolo’s. Het mediumtempo beschaafd rockende ‘The Grand Experiment’ kent enkele vreemde passages, maar echt experimenteel is het niet. Toch liever de zoete CSN&Y samenzang van het mooie akoestische ‘Waterfall’ dan. Dat is een rustig nummer dat niet had misstaan op ‘Songs From November’. ‘Agenda’ schept een ludiek beeld van de huidge hectische maatschappij en deze parodie klinkt een beetje mechanisch. Beatles invloeden vallen op en in feite is dat wel meer te merken in het werk van Neal Morse. Het klapstuk is echter het zesentwintig minuten durende ‘Alive Again’ dat alle ingrediënten van progrock in een smakelijke hutsepot stouwt. Inclusief beschouwende passages, onrustige prog avant-gardisme, zwevende schoonheid en speelse ritmiek biedt dit alles wat de fan mag verwachten van de heer Morse. Proggies kunnen dus weer even op avontuur gaan tussen de labyrintische spielereien van het brein.
