MELLOWTOY: Lies

For their fourth album, we find these Italians on the roster of a bigger label and, judging on what I got to hear, it seems a more than deserved step forward.
A dark brooding intro sets the tone for a dark, angry trip through metal country. Whilst the screamer does his job against a raw background of hardcore and electronics in the title track which comes next, the melodic singing of the normal voice is set in ditto passages. Overall we get a raw, intense mix of metal core with melodic metal in which those two singers hook their vocal lines, now angry shouting, then with mellow voice or grunge like or, in some parts, both are overlapping. The result is an accessible form of extreme meeting melodic metal, which is still surprisingly easy listening.
Alternating use of vocals isn’t new, but Mellowtoy sounds quite unique!

Voor hun vierde album doet deze Italiaanse band de overstap naar een groter label en, afgaande op wat ik hier hoor, lijkt het me een dubbel en dwars verdiende stap vooruit.
Een somber broedende intro zet de toon voor een donkere, kwade trip door metal land.
Terwijl de schreeuwer zijn ding doet tegen rauwe achtergrond van hardcore en elektronica in het daaropvolgende titelnummer, krijgen we de melodieuze zanglijnen van de normale stem tegen dito passages.
Globaal gezien krijgen we een rauwe, intense mix van metalcore met melodieuze metal waarin die twee zangers hun zanglijnen haken, nu eens kwaad schreeuwend, dan zoetgevooisd of soms richting grunge of nog, in sommige stukken, deels overlappend. Het resultaat is een toegankelijke vorm van extreem tot melodieus metaal, die evenwel lekker in het oor ligt.
Afwisselend gebruik van stemmen is niet nieuw, maar Mellowtoy klinkt vrij uniek!
