AT THE HOLLOW: What I Hold Most Dear

This threesome from Finland delivers with their debut an unusual piece of sober music, where they even replaced the bass by a contrabass. Minimal strumming on guitar, completed with gentle strokes with the bow or some finger plucking on the contrabass, as well as eerie tingling of bells or xylophone lie at the base of this melancholic work.
A light sustained drumroll accentuates the songs now and then, furthermore the role of the drums is rather limited, since the use of different kinds of percussion is equally important. Nevertheless, this modest gamma of instruments – sometimes crescendo swelling, sometimes quietly murmuring – is apt to convey a large gamut of emotions, from melancholy thru resignation to desperation… The soft singing sometimes shifts to whispering, singing in a higher register or occasionally raising the voice to connect better with the music. In short, this isn’t exactly music that will cheer you up.
Fragile, melodic, somber piece of work, which will appeal to fans of Sophia, though At The Hollow has a somewhat higher rock worth.

Dit Fins trio levert met hun debuut een niet alledaags werkje af met sobere instrumentatie waar de bas zelfs vervangen werd door een contrabas. Miniem getokkel op gitaar, aangevuld met voorzichtige halen met de strijkstok of wat gepluk met de vingers op de contrabas, evenals ijl getinkel van bellen of xylofoon vormen de basis van dit melancholische werk. Een lichte, aangehouden drumroffel accentueert her en der de nummers, verder is de rol van de drums vrij beperkt, want de nadruk ligt evenzeer op percussie. Nochtans kan met dit bescheiden instrumentengamma, dat nu eens (licht) crescendo aanzwelt, elders rustig kabbelt, een heel spectrum van emoties overgebracht worden, die gaan van melancholie via berusting tot vertwijfeling... Het rustige zingen kan al eens overgaan in gefluister, het gebruik van een hogere zangstem of spaarzaam luider zingen om aan te sluiten met de muziek. Kortom, dit is niet bepaald muziek om vrolijk van te worden.
Breekbaar, melodieus, somber werkstukje, dat fans van Sophia zal bekoren, al heeft At The Hollow een iets hoger rock gehalte.
