VISIGOTH: The Revenant King

About simultaneously with new material for Ostrogoth, the debut of the American Visigoth, Utah based, is released. Quite funny, since both bands refer, at least through their monikers, to two big Germanic tribes, the East- and West goths, which entered history by the end of the Roman domination of Europe.
Visigoth may well be new on this big record label, some of their songs aren’t. ‘Creature’ (from their ‘Final Spell’ EP), as well as ‘Vengeance’ and ‘Iron Brotherhood’ (from the ‘Vengeance’ demo) were revisited for this occasion, while ‘Necropolis’ is a Manilla Road cover. The brand new opening song is an awkward steamroller in which the guitar solo shines against the double bass background and the resounding voice of singer Jake Rogers (made me think a few times of Saviour Machine’s Eric Clayton) embellishes some passages with an epic touch. We get a sturdy piece of traditional heavy metal, where the long songs get some luster with some epic varnish, a doomy veil or an acoustic piece. The only negative point is the misplaced and too cliché sing-along ‘Brotherhood’.
Firmly, Visigoth makes a stand in the heavy metal frontline!

Grappig dat ongeveer tegelijkertijd met nieuw materiaal voor Ostrogoth ook het debuut van het Amerikaanse Visigoth, uit Utah, verschijnt. Beide bands verwijzen immers, via hun namen althans, naar twee grote Germaanse volkeren, de Oost- en Westgoten, die tegen het eind van de Romeinse overheersing van Europa in het voetlicht traden.
Visigoth mag dan wel nieuw zijn bij dit groot label, enkele songs zijn dat niet. ‘Creature’ (van de ‘Final Spell’ EP), evenals ‘Vengeance’ en ‘Iron Brotherhood’ (van de ‘Vengeance’ demo) werden herbewerkt en heropgenomen voor de gelegenheid, terwijl ‘Necropolis’ een Manilla Road cover is. De kersverse opener is een logge pletwals waarin een obligate gitaarsolo tegen dubbele bas achtergrond schittert en zanger Jake Rogers in bepaalde stukken met galmende stem (een paar keer aan Eric Clayton van Saviour Machine gedacht) een epische toets weet te leggen. We krijgen een stevige brok traditionele heavy metal, waar in de lange nummers accenten gelegd worden met nu eens episch vernis, dan weer een doomy sluier of nog een akoestisch stukje. Het enige wat tegenvalt is de misplaatste meezinger ‘Brotherhood’ die té cliché klinkt.
Visigoth stoot ineens door naar de heavy metal frontlinie!
