About thirteen years ago the idea of the foundation of Fortid came up in the mind of Einar ‘Eldur’ Thorberg in the harsh environment of Iceland. He managed to realize a magnificent crafted trilogy (theme: Asatrú literature and Völuspá) and relocated to Norway afterwards in 2008. Over there he gathered a band around him, so that Fortid was able to play live gigs and ’Pagan Prophecies’ happened to be the first physical evidence of that cooperation or, in other words, team spirit.
This story about the band’s prehistory in a nutshell leads us to the fifth studio album ‘9’. Nine songs, but maybe also a reference to the nine worlds in Nordic mythology? That will be revealed by Einar himself in our interview, but music-wise it is obvious that this is a very intense work with proper roots in fertile black metal ground. Yet there is much more going on. Can we speak of progressive post black metal? Well, we do not need to put this in a pigeonhole, it would not do justice to the superior blend of all kinds of genres and sounds one can hear on ‘9’. We welcome some idiosyncratic elements, but we also love to dive into the wealthy bouquet of fascinating sounds which is offered in these nine (mostly lengthy) songs.
‘Hrafnar’ graces us with rather slow riffs and solemn clean vocals, which is instantly evocative of Funeral. Soon it gets heavier, with sharp black metal guitars and juicy growls. But there is also a passage where bass is prominent, while fluttering guitars create an atmospheric effect. Later we have an outburst with sturdy vocals in the vein of Skálmöld. Indeed, Icelandic art always has some things in common. The pontifical chants, as if they are heathen prayers, also lead to beautiful transitions in ‘Hugur’ while they go in crescendo to black metal with a ferocious scream. A continuation with momentum and blackened fierce guitars leads towards the next part with clean vocals. Do I need to say more to convince you that ‘9’ appears to be a captivating adventure, with ‘Leit’ and ‘Galdur’ as most catchy songs, although it always has an ultra epic feel. The longest tracks, over ten minutes long, include the most experimental side of the band. Although they often are grim and harsh, the soaring magic of Sólstafir is sometimes very close, also due to the use of e-bow on guitar. Drum patterns are not standard either, Daniel Theobald deserves extra kudos for that. The last two songs are top notch stuff as well. Psychedelic mid-paced art blows over us in ‘Runir’, where the empyrean chants pass into tight guitar riffs with fine ornaments. Raucous vocals can suddenly change into a heavenly Pink Floyd moment, while piano adds a zest from time to time. ‘Hof’ starts with a progressive flirt, but impresses also with its peaceful melancholic vocals. There is so much to discover, so much to praise. Do not miss this masterpiece when you have a liking for Sólstafir, Skalmold, Windir and Myrkgrav or progressive black metal in all kinds of forms.

In het gure IJsland ontstond zo’n dertien jaar geleden het idee voor Fortid in de koker van Einar ‘Eldur’ Thorberg. Hij wist een prachtig uitgewerkte trilogie (thema: Asatrú literatuur en Völuspá) te realiseren en verhuisde daarna naar Noorwegen. Daar wist hij een band rond zich te verzamelen zodat men het podium op kon gaan en ’Pagan Prophecies’ werd het eerste tastbare bewijs van samenwerking oftewel team spirit.
Deze voorgeschiedenis in een notendop leidt ons naar het vijfde studioalbum ‘9’. Negen songs, maar misschien ook een verwijzing naar de negen werelden in Noordse mythologie? Dat zal door Einar wellicht zelve geopenbaard worden in ons interview, maar muzikaal kunnen we in ieder geval spreken van een intens werk met stevige poten in de kleigrond van black metal, maar zoveel meer. Post progressieve black metal dan? Ach, het kind hoeft geen naam te hebben, dat zou afbreuk doen aan de superieure samensmelting van allerlei stijlen en geluiden die we op ‘9’ aantreffen. We verwelkomen herkenningspunten als initiële houvast, maar dompelen ons graag onder in het weelderige boeket van fascinerende klanken dat de negen (overwegend lange) songs ons biedt.
‘Hrafnar’ zalft ons met vrij trage riffs en plechtige cleane zang, welke meteen herinneringen aan Funeral opwekt. Weldra wordt het heftiger, met scherpe black metal gitaren en sappige growls. Maar er is ook een passage waar de bas het voortouw neemt en uitwaaierende gitaren voor een atmosferisch effect zorgen. Later is er een uitbarsting met gedrongen zang à la Skálmöld. Ja, de kunst uit IJsland heeft toch altijd significante raakvlakken. De pontificale zang, als ware heidense gebeden, leiden ook in ‘Hugur’ tot mooie overgangen waarbij de aanzwelling tot black metal uitmondt in een verschroeiende schreeuw. Een stuwend vervolg met zwartgeblakerde scherpe gitaren leidt tot een volgend moment met cleane zang. Hoef ik het nog meer in de verf te zetten dat ‘9’ een wervelend, beklijvend avontuur is, met ‘Leit’ en ‘Galdur’ als meest catchy songs al blijft het altijd über episch. Lange tracks van om en bij de tien minuten tonen de band op de meest experimentele manier. Ook al kan men enorm heftig uit de hoek komen, de zweverige magie van Sólstafir is daar soms niet veraf, mede door gebruik van de e-bow op gitaar. De drumpatronen zijn evenmin standaard, daar mag Daniel Theobald een pluim voor op zijn (hoge) hoed steken. De twee laatste songs zijn eveneens van torenhoog niveau. Psychedelische mediumtempo kunst waait ons in ‘Runir’ tegemoet, maar de weidse zang geeft zichzelf gewonnen tegenover strakke gitaren met fraaie ornamenten. De ruwe zang kan zo omslaan naar een zwevend Pink Floyd moment, terwijl piano soms ook extra accenten aanlegt. ‘Hof’ begint met een progressieve flirt, maar weet ons evenzeer te pakken met vredige weemoedige zang. Zoveel te ontdekken, zoveel te bejubelen. Laat dit meesterwerk niet aan je voorbijgaan, wanneer Sólstafir, Skalmold, maar ook Windir en Myrkgrav en progressieve black metal in al zijn facetten je lief is.
