KORPIKLAANI: Tervaskanto

Those who saw Korpiklaani recently at the Graspop event know that this Finnish exuberant collective knows how to turn an audience into a roaring, dancing crowd. That is exactly what happened everywhere on this planet after the release of the previous album ‘Tales Along This Road’: the cheerful humppa folk metal appealed to a broad audience and these Finnish guys travelled all around the globe.
But meanwhile Jonne Järvelä and his mates have found the time to write a new album. This fourth studio album offers no differences worth mentioning, or it should be a return to the vernacular language. For most of the songs are sung in Finnish. Only four of them have English titles, and two of these are instrumental ones (that’s an easy one).
Still the sound is determined by their having a permanent accordion player (Juho) and violinist/flutist (Hittavainen) in the line-up. Add to this some heavy guitar riffs and the rough vocals of Jonne (no grunts or black screams, but clean vocals) and we have an idea of the general recipe of these eleven new, mostly up-tempo party stunners that Korpiklaani have composed. In comparison with the former albums, this is a quite hectic experience, focused on fast songs, while the melancholic tinge of the predecessors is moved to the background. Less depth, but more partying, that’s what it is all about. The highlight is the longest track of the album (it cannot be a coincidence, is it?) ‘Vesilahden Veräjillä’ that creates a very vast atmosphere by its repetitive guitar melodies and counting up chants. The thoughtful intro and spoken fragment give this song more depth. Also title track ‘Tervaskanto’ and ‘Palovana’ are fetching compositions.
In the other tracks the emphasis lies on velocity and having a party. Nothing wrong with that of course, for this is a smart view with an eye on playing live. In the end Korpiklaani always remains a pretty special band in the popular folk metal genre. Do purchase the special edition of ‘Tervaskanto’, for you get an extra DVD for free with a concert at last year’s Wacken included and I can assure you a mirthful evening!

Diegenen die Korpiklaani aan het werk zagen tijdens Graspop weten dat dit Finse olijke gezelschap er aardig in slaagt om elke massa om te toveren in een meebrullende, hossende massa. Dat is precies wat er overal ter wereld gebeurde na het uitkomen van het vorige album ‘Tales Along This Road’: de vrolijke humppa folk metal sloeg aan bij een breed publiek en de Finnen reisden de halve aardbol af.
Maar ondertussen hebben Jonne Järvelä en zijn makkers de tijd gevonden om een nieuw album bij elkaar te schrijven. Dit vierde studioalbum biedt geen noemenswaardige veranderingen, of het zou de terugkeer naar de moedertaal moeten zijn. Want de meeste nummers zijn in het Fins gezongen. Slechts vier Engelstalige nummers, waarvan er dan nog twee instrumentaal zijn, zo is het makkelijk natuurlijk.
Nog steeds wordt het geluid bepaald door een vaste accordeonspeler (Juho) en violist/fluitist (Hittavainen) die Korpiklaani in de bezetting heeft. Voeg daarbij enige stevige riffs en het rauwe stemgeluid van Jonne (geen grunts of black metal screams, maar gewone zang) en we weten ongeveer het recept van deze elf nieuwe, veelal up-tempo feestkrakers die Korpiklaani gecomponeerd heeft. In vergelijking met vorige albums is dit een vrij jachtig album dat gericht is op snelle nummers, waardoor het melancholieke karakter van de voorgangers een beetje naar het achterplan verschoven is. Minder diepgang, maar eens te meer jolijt zou ik zeggen. Het hoogtepunt vind ik ditmaal het langste nummer van de cd (kan weer geen toeval zijn) ‘Vesilahden Veräjillä’ dat door zijn repetitieve gitaarmelodieën en opsommende zang een heel weids gevoel creëert. De bedachtzame intro en gesproken fragment geven dit nummer meer diepgang. Ook titelsong ‘Tervaskanto’ en ‘Palovana’ zijn zondermeer fraaie composities.
In de rest van de nummers ligt de nadruk op snelheid en feestvieren. Niks mis mee natuurlijk, want dit is slim bekeken met het oog op vele live concerten. Tenslotte blijft Korpiklaani toch altijd een aparte band in het populaire folk metal genre. Schaf zeker de speciale editie aan want daar krijg je een extra DVD bij van hun concert op Wacken vorig jaar. Een fijne avond is verzekerd!
