ECNEPHIAS: Ecnephias

It has been ten years since the Italian Ecnephias released their first full length album and that coincides with the launching of their fifth studio album. ‘Ecnephias’ happens to be the third part of a trilogy with previous episodes called ‘Inferno’ and ’Necrogod’. The band evolved from a black metal outfit to a gothic constellation which is dark and occult, but remains quite relax as well. Vocalist/guitarist Mancan is the moving spirit and fortunately he managed to keep the same line-up as on the predecessor for this last part of the trilogy.
Thirteen songs are gathered in four chapters, all in all seventy minutes of music. This time the band chose Mauro Andreolli (Extrema, Vision Divine) for the mastering, but still the production sounds quite basic, although one can find a slightly improvement compared to earlier works. However, now the material is not as engrossing as on ‘Necrogod’. We still can enjoy the multiple leads that serpentine through the songs in a very melodic, sometimes fervent manner, but unfortunately we also found out that any monotony and long-winded parts are included in the songs. Also grotesque flavours win over genuine pathos from time to time. Many songs start with plucking, quiescent guitars and go in crescendo towards catchy gothic metal/rock. Vocals of Mancan always shift from dark, low-pitched gothic sounds to grunts we can best compare with Crematory, although the link with Moonspell is still tenable. Fragments of Italian lyrics are used to invigorate the narrative tendencies, Fields Of The Nephilim and Type O’Negative are also mentioned as influences, but the spark does not really work this time. That’s why the impression loomed up that the album is too long. However, if they manage to weed in future ideas, it might become more exciting. Not every CD must be filled to the utmost.

Het is tien jaar geleden dat het Italiaanse Ecnephias een eerste album uitbracht en dat valt samen met de release van hun vijfde studioalbum. ‘Ecnephias’ is het derde deel van een trilogie met als voorgaande episodes ’Inferno’ en ’Necrogod’. De band is geëvolueerd van een black metal band naar een gotische outfit die wel degelijk dark en occult is, maar ook vrij relax. Zanger/gitarist Mancan is de bezieler en gelukkig heeft de man de toen kakelnieuwe bezetting kunnen behouden voor dit laatste deel van de trilogie.
Dertien songs zijn verdeeld in vier hoofdstukken, zodat we zeventig minuten muziek krijgen. De band koos ditmaal om het geheel te laten masteren door Mauro Andreolli (Extrema, Vision Divine), maar nog steeds is de productie vrij basisch, al is er een lichte verbetering sinds voorgaande werkjes. Waar het ditmaal schort is dat het materiaal ons minder boeit dan op ‘Necrogod’. We kunnen nog genieten van veelvuldige leads die de songs op een melodieuze, soms vinnige manier dooraderen, maar we stelden helaas ook enige langdradigheid vast in de songs en momenten waar potsierlijkheid het wint van gedreven pathos. Vele songs starten met tokkelende, rustige gitaren en bloeien dan open op een vlotte manier. De zang van Mancan wisselt steeds af van donkere, warme gotische klanken naar een grunt die we nog best met Crematory kunnen vergelijken, al houdt de link met Moonspell ook stand. Italiaanse flarden tekst worden gebruikt om de narratieve tendensen kracht bij te zetten, Fields Of The Nephilim en Type O’Negative vermeldt men ook als invloed, maar de vonk sprong amper over, zodat dit uiteindelijk een lange zit werd. Als men echter gaat wieden in toekomstige ideeën wordt het mogelijk terug spannender. Niet elke CD hoeft tot aan het gaatje gevuld.
