RANGER: Where Evil Dwells

Although this ‘Where Evil Dwells’ is their real debut, last year another album of this Finnish quartet was released. ‘Skull Splitting Metal’ contains all the songs of the EP’s and demos the band had recorded so far, but let’s look at this current album.
They begin with thundering drums, melodic spine chilling guitar with an explosion at the end … We’re just one minute in Ranger domain and all hell breaks loose. You’ll get a speed attack straight from the eighties reminding strongly of Exciter (although this sounds less primitive than their debut about 30 years ago) and a bit Slayer. Shredding, flashing guitar, aggressively galloping drums and a raw voice, reminding vaguely of Venom, are the main ingredients in this steaming cauldron. In fact, only the intro of ‘Black Circle’ has some breathing space in the frenetic assault.

Al is deze ‘Where Evil Dwells’ hun echt debuut, toch verscheen vorig jaar al een album van dit Fins kwartet. ‘Skull Splitting Metal’ bevat alle nummers van de EP’s en demo’s die de band tot dusver ingeblikt had, maar laten we het huidige album in beschouwing nemen.
Ze beginnen met donderende drums, melodieuze gitaar die zorgt voor kippenvel en een ontploffing tot slot … We zijn één minuutje op Ranger terrein en de hel kan losbarsten. Jullie krijgen een speed aanval, regelrecht afstammend uit de tachtiger jaren, die erg aan Exciter (al klink dit minder primitief dan hun debuut pakweg 30 jaar geleden) en een beetje aan Slayer denken doet. Vingervlug flitsend gitaarwerk, agressief galopperende drums en rauwe strot, die vaag aan Venom denken doet, zijn de hoofdingrediënten in deze kolkende ketel. Eigenlijk biedt enkel de intro van ‘Black Circle’ wat ademruimte in deze driftige aanval.
Overtuigend neo-speed opus!
