UFO: A Conspiracy Of Stars

The British UFO delivers their 22nd album since their 1970 debut. Guitarist Vinnie Moore took charge of the lion’s share of the compositions, but original member and frontman Pill Mogg penned the lyrics. Remarkable fact: sound engineer Chris Tsangarides was already in the studio at the time of their debut, be it as 14 year old trainee.
Well, these veterans deliver a fine piece of work, which doesn’t equal their classics from the seventies, but Phil’s voice is still as recognizable as ever, while guitar hero Moore gets plenty of opportunities for soloing. These are often bluesy inspired, but some jazz crept in as well.
Opening with ‘Killing Kind’ warms us up, nothing more and nothing less: this is no album opening with the best song, leaving you longing for more, but craftsmanship all the way. Then comes ‘Run Boy Run’, spiced up by a diversified solo with room for some impressive shredding. In ‘Ballad Of The Left Hand Gun’ we get some cajun influence, nicely fitting to the title of the song. We find spacy keyboard in ‘Sugar Cane’s intro, where the lyrics which contain a reference to Florida’s ‘Tallahassee Bridge’ (this remarkable toponym was also used in 1967 by Bobby Gentry in her hit ‘Ode To Billie Joe’), while this pretty long mid tempo song contains arguably Moore’s best solo. A bit further ‘Precious Cargo’ is pretty bluesy with catchy chorus and a surprising jazzy touch at the end. Although next song is heavier, they all are pretty temperate bluesy hard rock songs embellished with keyboard or piano, while we find occasional fireworks in the guitar escapades. By the way, the bonus track on digipak is one of the harder and better songs. Even if it’s rather short, worth every extra penny!
I was simple curious to hear what these guys still had to offer and was very pleasantly surprised. UFO stands for quality!

Het Britse UFO levert hier zijn 22ste album af sinds hun debuut in 1970. Gitarist Vinnie Moore stond in voor het leeuwendeel van de composities, maar oorspronkelijk lid en frontman Phil Mogg verzorgde de teksten. Merkwaardig feit: de geluidstechnicus Chris Tsangarides was al bij hen in de studio voor hun debuut album, zij het als 14 jarig hulpje.
Nou, deze veteranen leveren een puik werk af, dat het weliswaar niet haalt van hun klassiekers uit de seventies, maar Phils stem is nog steeds even herkenbaar als vroeger, terwijl gitaarheld Moore royaal mag soleren. Deze zijn vaak blues geïnspireerd, maar we vinden ook sporen jazz terug.
Opener ‘Killing Kind’ is een goeie opwarmer, niet meer en niet minder: dit is geen album dat opent met de sterkste song en waarna je wat op je honger blijft zitten, maar vakmanschap van begin tot einde. Daarna is ‘Run Boy Run’ gekruid met een lange gediversifieerde solo waarin plaats voor wat indrukwekkende shredding. In ‘Ballad Of A Left Hand Gun’ zitten wat cajun invloeden hetgeen best aansluit met de titel. In de intro van ‘Sugar Cane’ zit wat spacy keyboard, met een tekst waarin verwezen wordt naar de ‘Tallahassee Bridge’ in Florida (deze opvallende plaatsnaam dook in 1967 ook al op in de hit ‘Ode To Billie Joe’ van Bobby Gentry), terwijl dit vrij lange mid tempo nummer mijn in ziens de beste solo van Moore bevat. Wat verder is ‘Precious Cargo’ een erg bluesy nummer met plakkend refrein en een verassend jazzy staartje. Al is het volgende nummer steviger, het blijven allemaal vrij bezadigde bluesy hardrock nummers met keyboard of piano versiering, terwijl het occasionele vuurwerk van de gitaarescapades komt. Het bonusnummer op de digipack is overigens één van de hardere en betere nummers. Zelfs al is het vrij kort, het is de kleine meerprijs waard!
Ik was gewoon nieuwsgierig naar wat de oude rotten te bieden hadden en werd meer dan aangenaam verrast. UFO levert kwaliteit af!
