OBLIVIOUS: Out Of Wilderness

This Swedish bunch deliver with ‘Out Of The Wilderness’ their third album, filled with a groovy kind of seventies flavored heavy/hard rock, adorned with some tambourine, cowbell and playful variety in the use of voice.
Opening track ‘For Who Do Burn’ is swirling dark hard rock with some wah-wah guitar and sets the tone alright. Nice touches are the tambourine in the beginning and some ticking on a cowbell in the end of the song. ‘Bang’ starts with the firing pin being armed and becomes pushing stoner with again some fun use of cowbell. From ‘Shore To Shore’, even if it reminds a bit of Cream, I mainly remember the long piece, sometimes a cappella, where a modulated ‘a’ is sung, accompanied, towards the end, by the clapping of hands, giving a kind of tribal effect. In the title track they play with voices again (‘oe-oe’s in the intro, ‘yeah-yeah’s halfway through), while it slowly builds to a kind of jamming end with steaming Grand Funk drive. In ‘Screwed’ there’s again some playful use of voice, it seems a trademark for the singer, and that’s alright by me. ‘Midnight’ has an early Black Sabbath feel, but gains in energy later on. The closing one is musing quietly acoustic, but swells dramatically in the finale at last.
Only after 28 minutes this ride ends. Now I’m the first to say that quality prevails over quantity, but, even if Oblivious agreeably surprised me with good songs and nice arrangements, this is only a long EP! Anyway, I’m curious what the future holds in store for them!

Deze Zweden zijn met deze ‘Out Of The Wilderness’ toe aan hun derde album; gevuld met een groovy soort seventies gekruide heavy/hardrock, versierd met wat tamboerijn, koebel en speels gevarieerd stemgebruik.
Opener ‘For Who Do Burn’ is kolkend donkere hardrock met wat wah-wah gitaar en zet prima de toon. Leuke accentjes met tamboerijn in het begin en wat getik op koebel in het einde van het nummer. ‘Bang’ begint met een slagpin die in gespannen wordt en wordt een stuwende stoner met alweer leuk gebruik van de koebel. Van ‘Shore To Shore’, dat weliswaar wat aan Cream doet denken, onthoud ik vooral het lange stuk, soms a capella, waarin een gemoduleerde ‘a’ gezongen wordt, die naar het einde van de song, vergezeld van handgeklap, een soort tribal effect geeft. In het titelnummer wordt weer met stem gespeeld (‘oe-oe’s tijdens de intro, ‘yeah-yeah’s halverwege), terwijl het rustig opbouwt naar een soort jammend einde met stomende Grand Funk drive. Ook in ‘Screwed’ zit dat speelse stemgebruik, het lijkt wel een handelsmerk van de zanger en dat kan ik best pruimen. ‘Midnight’ begint als iets van de vroege Black Sabbath, maar wordt later energieker. Het afsluitende nummer is rustig mijmerend akoestisch, maar zwelt in de finale toch nog dramatisch aan.
Na slechts 28 minuten eindigt de rit. Nu ben ik de eerste om te zeggen dat kwaliteit beter is dan kwantiteit, maar, zelfs al verraste Oblivious me aangenaam met goede nummers en arrangementen, dit is een maar lange EP! Hoe dan ook, ik ben nieuwsgierig naar hun volgende werk!
