CRIMSON WIND: Last Poetry Line

The band was founded in 2008 en in 2011 the first album of these Italians was released.
The singer on ‘The Wings Of Salvation’ has been replaced since then by Guido. This vocalist has a rather high pitched voice and small range, he seldom sings in lower keys (e.g. in the beautiful, piano driven ballad ‘The Hills’ containing also an acoustic guitar solo) and his shriek is heard only once, nevertheless he’s able to make the songs live.
The orchestral music contains a lot a fast passages, but the feverish drummer also adorns the songs with inventive patterns (e.g. in de first part of ‘Death Dwells’). There are alternating solo parts for keyboards and guitar (including a surprising bluesy touch in ‘The Storm’), while in ‘In Vain’ both even overlap. To be precise, I would describe Crimson Winds style as symphonic, epical power with occasional prog touch. Towards the end, we get the quiet, dreamy ‘Whisper’, before piano kicks off the epical ‘Heirloom’ … Other instruments are added to create a long bombastic intro, then comes a sung piece, followed by a quiet break after which they build towards a climax, then slowing down peacefully. Looks fine on paper, but in practice the song isn’t able to keep my attention! The bonus track on the CD suffers from the same ailment: after a promising, keyboard driven intro the song isn’t really captivating. I’d say, lacking the right melody and due to dull singing.
Even if I’m a bit disappointed, I must conclude, after a mainly good album, that these Crimson guys certainly have potential!

De band werd in 2008 opgericht en in 2011 zag het eerste album van deze Italianen het licht. De zanger op ‘The Wings Of Salvation’ werd inmiddels vervangen door Guido. Deze vocalist heeft een eerder hoge stem en klein bereik, zelden gaat hij laag (vb. in de prachtige, op piano steunende ballade ‘The Hills’ met zijn akoestische gitaarsolo) en zijn schrille schreeuw horen we slechts één keer, niettemin weet hij de nummers leven in te blazen.
De orkestrale muziek bevat veel snelle stukken, maar de koortsige drummer zorgt evenzeer voor inventieve patronen (o.a. eerste deel van ‘Death Dwells’). Er zijn geregeld alternerende solopartijen voor toetsen en gitaar (verrassende blues toets in ‘The Storm’ incluis) en in ‘In Vain’ overlappen beide zelfs. Om nauwkeurig te zijn zou ik het geluid van Crimson Wind omschrijven als symfonische, epische power met occasionele prog toets. Naar het einde toe vinden we nog een rustpunt in het dromerige ‘Whisper, vooraleer piano het epische ‘Heirloom’ inzet…. Andere instrumenten vallen in om een lange bombastische intro te creëren, daarna een gezongen stuk, gevolgd door een rustige break waarna kalmpjes naar een climax toegewerkt wordt om vredig uit te deinen. Het ziet er goed uit op papier, maar in praktijk dwaalt mijn aandacht helaas af! Het bonusnummer op CD is in hetzelfde bedje ziek: na een veelbelovende, rond keyboard melodie opgebouwde intro moddert het wat aan zonder te overtuigen. Mijn in ziens, bij gebrek aan goede melodie en door mindere zanglijn.
Zelfs al ben ik wat teleurgesteld, na een grotendeels goed album, moet ik toch besluiten dat deze Crimson kerels zeker potentieel hebben!
