SHAMAN: Immortal

Figure three has an important role in the band history of Brazilian Shaman. The band came into being in 2000 after the departure of three members of Angra. And now, after promoting their album ‘Reason’ (2005) with a world tour of one year, three members have left the band again. Drummer Ricardo Confessori was the only one who remained, but he succeeded in recruiting new skilled musicians around him.
Vocalist André Mathos is replaced by Thiago Bianchi, but he has more or less the same voice timbre: a clean, powerful voice that is doing well in higher and low ranges. Guitarist Leo Mancini is doing a great job and Fernando Quesada (bass) is in charge for the tight rhythm section together with drummer Ricardo. After a bombastic intro the band cuts loose in ‘Inside Chains’ (vigorous vocals) and ‘Tribal By Blood’ (track with momentum and delicious guitar soloing). The glorious title track includes any keyboards and a spoken fragment. Shaman retained its slightly progressive influences, these are coming to the surface during the track ‘One Life’ in which the vintage sound of the organ adds an extra dimension. A videoclip has been shot for ‘In The Dark’, that’s a ballad, not that special, but fine to open the possibilities for some airplay. Following track ‘Strength’ rocks the cradle again with flashing guitar licks. After the high pitched vocals in rocking tune ‘Freedom’ things are spotted on piano pads in a quiescent piece of music called ‘Never Yield!’ and the extensive ‘The Yellow Brick Road’. This song is a gate-crasher: quite experimental and atmospheric.
Their first album on Scarlet Records in a new line-up includes some great tracks, though I have the general impression than predecessor ‘Reason’ was stronger. The renewed Shaman hits the road again in 2008 for an extended tour to convince their fans of their survival.

Het getal drie speelt een grote rol in de bandgeschiedenis van het Braziliaanse Shaman. De groep ontstond in 2000 nadat drie leden Angra verlaten hadden. En nu blijken er na een wereldtournee van een jaar om het album ‘Reason’ (2005) te promoten weer drie leden Shaman verlaten te hebben. Drummer Ricardo Confessori was de enige die overbleef, maar hij is er in geslaagd bekwame nieuwe muzikanten rond zich heen te verzamelen.
Zanger André Mathos is vervangen door Thiago Bianchi, maar hij heeft min of meer hetzelfde timbre: een heldere, krachtige stem die probleemloos ook hoge noten haalt. Gitarist Leo Mancini levert spetterend gitaarwerk af en Fernando Quesada zorgt met Ricardo voor een strakke ritmesectie. Na een bombastische intro gaat de band er stevig tegenaan in ‘Inside Chains’ (krachtige stem) en ‘Tribal By Blood’ (stuwend nummer met knappe gitaarsolo). De glorieuze titelsong bevat ook toetsen en een gesproken stuk. Shaman heeft ook de licht progressieve invloeden behouden, deze komen het meest aan de oppervlakte in ‘One Life’ waar de vintage klank van het orgel een extra dimensie toevoegt. Er is een videoclip gemaakt voor ‘In The Dark’ en dat is een ballad, die weinig opmerkelijk is, maar wel goed voor airplay natuurlijk. Daarna gaat Shaman er terug hard tegenaan met het flitsende ‘Strength’. Na het hoog gezongen rockende ‘Freedom’ komt de piano meer op de voorgrond in het kalme stuk van ‘Never Yield!’ en het lange ‘The Yellow Brick Road’. Dit nummer is een vreemde eend in de bijt en vrij experimenteel en atmosferisch.
Hun eerste album voor Scarlet Records in een nieuwe bezetting bevat knappe nummers, al had ik de indruk dat de voorganger ‘Reason’ sterker was. Het vernieuwde Shaman gaat in 2008 terug lange tijd op tournee om de fans te overtuigen dat ze er nog staan.
