EREB ALTOR: Nattramn

Ereb Altor has just released their fifth studio album and that’s something we truly looked forward to. This side project of two Isole members – in this case operating under the monikers Ragnar and Mats and performing on stage as true Vikings – was founded in 2003 out of admiration for Bathory. It is true, many bands have been influenced by Quorthon, yet Ereb Altor regales us with such a signature interpretation of epic grandness and on the other hand blackened harshness that this successor of ’Fire Meets Ice’ (2013) really leaves us in awe again.
In recent years we have found out to our satisfaction that the Swedes more and more appear on the festival bills and they also did a tour with Borknagar and Månegarm. The recruitment of drummer Tord (in which studio the albums are recorded) and bassist Mikael opened possibilities to play more gigs. Thus the name of Ereb Altor is spread in a broader way and that will surely continue after the release of ‘Nattramn’. This Swedish title stands for a kind of raven from Nordic mythology, since the guys one more time present us long compositions with lyrics about sagas and legends from Swedish and Nordic heritage. Musically one can find a perfect balance between harsh black metal eruptions and epic melodies to drift away from this sublunary vale of tears. Consequently this happens to be escapism full of beauty and that starts with the menacing, dark sounds (percussion and ethereal chants) of ‘The Son Of Vindsvalk’. An important charm is that the music always has a melancholic doom flavour. Just listen to those magnificent guitar leads in ‘Midsommarblot’ and the powerful, clean vocals as clear as a mountain river. All this is taken to a higher level with unearthly beautiful keyboards and the guitar soloing reminds a bit of Saturnus from time to time.
The title track is more grim and faster, with blackened screams, but it also includes a break to end up in a monumental manner. ‘Dance Of The Elves’ has – in despite of a kind of loveliness – a dynamic contrast between serene bard chants and raucous screams, while the nine minutes long ‘Dark Waters’ appears to be a perfect amalgamation of slow doom melodies, catchiness and amazing leads. This is epic black metal done to a turn! ‘Across The Giant’s Blood’ is also captivating, with its ‘stop and go’ riffs, special phrasing of lyrics and juicy riffs plus solos. Towards the end one can hear a kind of belligerent tinge, later resignation fading out in nature sounds. Actually the music of Ereb Altor has any similarities with While Heaven Wept; that’s what we are thinking when truly enjoying everything the band stands for during ‘The Nemesis Of Frej’. And that is quite a lot! Another masterpiece of epic Viking doom metal has been born!

Ereb Altor is toe aan het vijfde studioalbum en daar kijken we altijd reikhalzend naar uit. Dit zijproject van twee Isole leden – welke hier opereren onder de namen Ragnar en Mats en als ware Vikings ten tonele verschijnen – werd in 2003 opgericht uit bewondering voor Bathory. Daar zijn natuurlijk tal van bands door beïnvloed, maar Ereb Altor maakt er zo’n enerzijds epische en anderzijds heftige muzikale interpretatie van dat deze opvolger van ’Fire Meets Ice’ (2013) ons weer uitermate beklijft.
De laatste jaren hebben we tot onze tevredenheid vastgesteld dat de Zweden meer en meer festivalaffiches sieren en ze deden ook een tournee met Borknagar en Månegarm. De inlijving van drummer Tord (in wiens studio de albums opgenomen worden) en bassist Mikael maakte het mogelijk om meer concerten te spelen. Zo breidt de naam van Ereb Altor zich uit en dat zal zeker ook gebeuren na de release van ‘Nattramn’. Deze Zweedse titel staat voor een soort raaf uit de Scandinavische mythologie, want ook nu presenteren de heren ons lange composities met teksten over sagen en legenden uit Zweden en het noorden. Muzikaal heerst er een perfecte balans tussen harde black metal erupties en epische melodieën waar je zo op wegzweeft vanuit dit tranendal. Escapisme vol schoonheid dus en dat start met de dreigende, duistere klanken (percussie en etherische zang) van ‘The Son Of Vindsvalk’. Een belangrijke charme is dat de muziek steeds een achterliggende weemoedige doom tint heeft. Luister maar naar dat prachtige gitaarwerk in ‘Midsommarblot’ en de krachtige, cleane zang zuiver als een bergriviertje. Alles wordt naar een verheven niveau getransporteerd door onwerelds mooie keyboards en de gitaarsolo’s doen wel eens aan Saturnus denken.
Het titelnummer is grimmiger en sneller, met zwartgeblakerde screams, maar houdt ook even in om dan weer monumentaal te eindigen. ‘Dance Of The Elves’ heeft – ondanks een bepaalde lieflijkheid – een pittig contrast tussen serene bardenzang en ruwe screams, terwijl het negen minuten durende ‘Dark Waters’ een perfect amalgaam vormt van trage doomsferen, aanstekelijkheid en prachtige leads. Dit is epische black metal op zijn best! Beklijvend is ook ‘Across The Giant’s Blood’, met zijn afgekapte riffs, speciale frasering der teksten en sappige riffs plus solo’s. Naar het einde toe is er een zekere strijdlustigheid, daarna berusting om weg te ebben in natuurgeluiden. In feite heeft de muziek van Ereb Altor wel enige raakvlakken met While Heaven Wept, bedenken we wanneer we tijdens ‘The Nemesis Of Frej’ nog uitgebreid genieten van alles waar de band voor staat. En dat is niet mis! Een volgend meesterwerk in het epische Viking doom metal genre is geboren!
