SUNLIGHT: My Own Truth

Sunlight’s debut, ‘My Own Truth’, can be roughly classified as melodic power metal.
In the opening song with piano galore, we get acquainted with a singer who has a slightly disturbing accent and shouldn’t try to sing too high pitches. Although, in ‘Follow Your Heart’ there’s some high wailing which sounds fine, but then it belongs to the backing vocalist. Often the guitars almost drown in the sea of keyboards, a negative point for the production. After the slower title track with bombastic climax, we shift a few gears higher. Although still keyboard in ‘Eastern train’, this time they have a Hammond flavor, which gives the speedy pieces an original sound. ’When I See You’ is a convincing ballad with crystal clear piano tinkle where some power ballad pieces are thrown in for good measure and more guitars towards the end. Again Hammond in ‘Earthquake’, but better integrated in the melodic song, which is my preferred one, partly due to its fine riffing.
Then, two songs takes us suddenly on the symphonic metal road, ‘Struggle’ even has some woman voice in the midst. Both times Sunlight keeps the song mid tempo, which suits me better than the band’s dealing in monotonous raging symphonic speed. Last song is a ballad with piano and strings, which add a folky touch halfway, which takes us slowly towards the closing of the album.
Surely, the keyboard is the main attraction in the band, but globally this still seems a quintet looking for the right sound and a better production. I noticed that three songs were already recorded on an EP dating a few years ago, probably their sound evolved since?

In de opener met een overdaad aan piano maken we kennis met een zanger met licht storend accent, die de hogere regionen best niet te vaak verkent. Al zit er in ‘Follow Your Heart’ een fikse uithaal die wél prima klinkt, maar die komt van de backing vocals. De gitaren verdrinken vaak haast in de toetsenbrij, een minpunt voor de productie. Na het tragere titelnummer met bombastische climax, versnellen we fiks. Weliswaar nog steeds keyboard in ‘Eastern Train’, maar nu met Hammond accent, hetgeen de speedy stukken een origineel geluid verleent. ‘When I See You’ is een overtuigende ballad met kristalhelder pianogetinkel waar stukken powerballad her en der tussen zitten en méér gitaar naar het einde toe. Weer die Hammond sound in ’Earthquake’, maar beter geïntegreerd in het melodieuze nummer, dat mede door zijn prima riff, mijn voorkeur wegdraagt. Dan gaan twee nummers plots de symfo metal toer op, ‘’Struggle’ heeft zelfs wat vrouwenstem in het middenstuk. Sunlight houdt het beide keren op stevig mid-tempo en dat bevalt me beter dan bands die eentonig razende speedsymfo serveren. De afsluiter is een ballad met piano en strijkers, die halverwege een folky toets leggen, die rustig naar het slot van het album toewerkt.
De toetsenist gaat met de pluimen lopen, maar globaal gezien lijkt dit een vijftal dat zowel zijn ware ik als een betere producer zoekt. Ik merkte dat drie nummers al op een EP van een paar jaar geleden stonden, waarschijnlijk evolueerde hun geluid sindsdien?
