KAMELOT: Haven

With ‘Silverthorn’, Kamelot proved that no one is irreplaceable, even if we are talking about the hugely popular front man Roy Khan. After intensive brainstorming he was followed up by Swedish Tommy Karevik (Seventh Wonder) and he did the job in a marvellous, nay legendary manner. It speaks for itself that he even grew more into his role on ‘Haven’. He has even written the deep-draught lyrics full of social awareness for this eleventh studio album from the American/German/Swedish symphonic power metal band.
Music-wise it has become a diverse album with a large amount of typical Kamelot characteristics, such as the nearly sweet melody lines that brim with emotions, the broad symphonic arrangements that add cinematic grandness to the music and naturally a firm portion of metal as heavy foundation. As usual band leader Thomas Youngblood let himself go in amazing guitar solos and sturdy riffs, most of the time supported by eminent keyboard pads from Oliver Palotai.
Drama and emotional expressions have a leading function in songs like the opener ‘Fallen Star’, ‘Insomnia’ and the rather mid-paced drawling ‘Citizen Zero’ regaled with choirs. Nevertheless, in addition to their bombastic allures, Kamelot remains very catchy. In the ballad ‘Under Grey Skies’ we hear a duet with Charlotte Wessels (Delain) and the Uillean pipes of Troy Donockley (Nightwish). The piano ballad ‘Here’s To The Fall’ sounds very tormented. The slightly experimental work manifests itself in the songs where Alissa White-Gluz does any firm grunts. The aggressive ‘Liar Liar (Wasteland Monarchy)’ is a good example of that, while the modern stamping ‘Revolution’ ever showcases some industrial elements with its murky riffs and that’s not really the style we are used from Kamelot. The album was produced by Sascha Paeth – that’s a tradition – mastering was in the hands of Jacob Hansen. For the flamboyant artwork they also recruited well-known artists; Stefan Heilemann and Gustavo Sazes might be considered household names and giants in their art. This is a strong Kamelot album with some little surprises that will once again expand the world-wide fan base of the band.

Met ‘Silverthorn’ bewees Kamelot dat niemand onvervangbaar is, zelfs niet wanneer het de immens populaire frontman Roy Khan betreft. Hij werd na intensief beraad vervangen door de Zweed Tommy Karevik (Seventh Wonder) en die nam meteen op legendarische wijze de honneurs waar. Uiteraard heeft de man zich op ‘Haven’ nog meer ontwikkeld. Hij schreef zelfs de diepgravende, sociaalbewuste teksten voor dit elfde studioalbum van de Amerikaans/Duits/Zweedse symfonische power metalband.
Muzikaal is het een divers album geworden met een flink aantal typische Kameloteigenschappen zoals de haast zoete melodielijnen vol emotie, de brede symfonische arrangementen die de muziek een cinematische grandeur geven en natuurlijk ook een fikse portie metal als stevige basis. Als vanouds leeft bandleider Thomas Youngblood zich uit in verrukkelijke gitaarsolo’s en kordate riffs, veelal geruggensteund door eminent keyboardwerk van Oliver Palotai.
Dramatiek en emotionele geladenheid spelen daarbij een grote rol in songs als opener ‘Fallen Star’, ‘Insomnia’ en het vrij slepende ‘Citizen Zero’ met enige koorzang. Naast de bombastische allure blijft Kamelot echter erg catchy. In de ballade ‘Under Grey Skies’ horen we een duet met Charlotte Wessels (Delain) en de Uillean pipes van Troy Donockley (Nightwish). De pianoballade ‘Here’s To The Fall’ klinkt dan weer erg getormenteerd. Het lichtjes experimentele werk manifesteert zich in de songs waar Alissa White-Gruz (Arch Enemy) even enkele ferme grunts plaatst. Het agressieve ‘Liar Liar (Wasteland Monarchy)’ is daar een mooi voorbeeld van, terwijl het modern stampende ‘Revolution’ zelfs wat industrial-trekjes vertoont met zijn drassige riffs en niet echt de stijl is die we van Kamelot verwachten. Het album werd traditiegetrouw geproduceerd door Sascha Paeth, mastering was in handen van Jacob Hansen. Voor het flamboyante artwork nam men eveneens bekende namen onder de arm: Stefan Heilemann en Gustavo Sazes mogen als grote kleppers in hun kunst beschouwd worden. Dit is een sterk Kamelotalbum met enkele kleine verrassingen dat de wereldwijde fanbasis nog zal uitbreiden.
