SPEARFISH: In The Meantime

It took Swedish band Spearfish ten years to release a fourth album. Fortunately there’s still the nucleus of Thomas Thulin and Peter Lundin at the driving wheel! The new recruit is drummer Marcus Höher who is the perfect match to Thomas and Peter. We can’t help thinking of the early days of Rush when we listen to the album, but that should be a compliment, because the band manages to give its own touch with modern production techniques. They bring back that wonderful feeling with very good songs, very good playing and an excellent production.
There’s a sort of natural flow into the music that makes it very listenable, while still being adventurous. This is music that should be heard. Put this out on a double vinyl with a download voucher as a bonus and you have the perfect format for this band. But the CD will do, as this is great music anyway. The absolute standout track is the instrumental ‘Ursus Polaris’.

Tien jaar na hun derde cd, brengt het Zweedse Spearfish nieuw werk uit met nog steeds bassist/zanger Thomas Thulin aan het stuur. Ook gitarist Peter Lundin is nog van de partij. Zij worden voortgestuwd door drummer Marcus Höher. Muzikaal doet het trio vooral denken aan Rush en dan meer bepaald aan de beginperiode. Uiteraard wordt er gewerkt met de productietechnieken van vandaag, maar bij het beluisteren kregen we vooral heimwee naar die eerste jaren dat we Rush leerden kennen en verrukt luisterden naar die originele fusion van prog- en hardrock, gekruid door de aparte stem van Geddy Lee – niet toevallig ook zanger/bassist.
Spearfish brengt dat gevoel weer naar boven en ze doen dat met puike nummers, hemels instrumentaal werk en een gestroomlijnde, maar zeker geen steriele productie. Dit is muziek die gehoord moet worden. Wat zou dit mooi staan op vinyl!
