English: The last studio effort by Status Quo was the unplugged ‘Stripped Bare’ album on which the band leaves their electric guitars in the closet and play new arrangements with an extended line-up of a selection of well- and less well known Quo classics. Setting up an international tour with this project would be a very expensive journey and the band decided to use modern media to share the unplugged live experience with the world: do a couple of concerts and record them for release on DVD and CD. Their show at the London Roundhouse was also recorded by the BBC for broadcast on television.
The release of this digipak with two audio CD’s and a DVD makes this show available to the rest of the world and it surely is an impressive thing. Besides the band, there are eleven (!) extra musicians, including a string section and accordionist Geraint Watkins who was also a prominent guest on the studio recordings. Although this is a very big line-up, the sound is very clear and transparent and the songs survive wonderfully in this setting. The focus is still on Quo’s two front men Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt who - supported by two female backing singers - take all the lead vocals and make sure this is still ‘Status Quo’. Status started out as a psychedelic pop group, then became a heavy boogie band and later became the lighter poprock band they are today. With the return of the Frantic Four (the original band) last year, they showed they can still rock heavy, but now the band is back in its ‘light’ version and that’s how Rossi likes them most these days. With this unplugged version, he can fully concentrate on the songs and he seems very happy that way. Parfitt hasn’t lost one bit of his rock voice and he manages to make the songs he sings still sound like rockers. This is an impressive show, musically interesting, but far removed from the band rock fans once loved so much. Their audience is now mostly a middle aged and senior group, but so is the band.
