HEATHEN FORAY: Into Battle

Austrian Heathen Foray has managed to gather some recognition in mainly German speaking areas by sharing the stage a lot of times with other pagan metal bands on festivals. The albums ’The Passage’ and ’Armored Bards’ are meritorious discs with fervent melodic death metal in Amon Amarth tradition and a proper amount of classical heavy metal in the guitar skills, so that also power metal fans will appreciate the band. They have released a third album independently, but now the five-piece has inked a new deal with Massacre Records for ‘Into Battle’.
That title is really a cliché, yet this is not just a simply furious album. In despite of many line-up changes, Heathen Foray has created quite a consistent sound through the years. In opener ‘Fight’ one might rudimentary describe it as Helloween with Amon Amarth vocals. Guitarists Bernd S. Zahn and Alex Wildinger excel in melodious guitar solos; mostly wild and furious, but from time to time charming sensitive as well. In addition to the deep growls of Robert Schroll we often hear clean heathen harmony vocals, although these are not always top notch. These clean chants are obviously inspired by Ensiferum and they sound melancholic in the German ‘Wofür Ich Streit’, supported by some acoustic plucking guitars. Here they take a long instrumental mid-paced start, before cut loose again. The pretty lengthy as well ‘Tir No Nog’ reminds a bit of Metallica in guitar skills and stomping riffs. The band surely includes the necessary diversity and in despite of its belligerent album title, they more than once slacken down pace, for instance in the very epic ‘Freundschaft’ which turned into one of our favourites. The guys also like having fun, just listen to the Rammstein alike clownish ‘Knüppeltroll’. They can be sure of some hilarious vibes on festivals. On the other hand we have the occluding instrumental ‘Wigrid’ which is symphonic and cinematic, as if they have to end in a very momentous way. As hidden track we have ‘Winterking’ and that is a quite nervously played acoustic track with clean vocals. The album has a sure-fire sound (mastered by Andy Horn at the Red Room Studios) and is presented with artwork of the well-known Jan Yrlund. Proper melodic pagan metal.

Het Oostenrijkse Heathen Foray wist zich in Duitstalig gebied al enigszins in de kijker te spelen door veelvuldig het podium te delen met andere pagan metal bands op festivals. De albums ’The Passage’ en ’Armored Bards’ waren verdienstelijke schijven met pittige melodieuze death metal in Amon Amarth traditie en een fikse scheut klassieke heavy metal in het gitaarwerk, zodat ook power metal fans de band kunnen appreciëren. Daarna is er in eigen beheer nog een derde album uitgekomen, maar nu heeft het vijftal een nieuwe deal met Massacre Records voor ‘Into Battle’.
Die titel is behoorlijk cliché, maar toch is dit allerminst een simpelweg furieus album. Ondanks vele bezettingswijzigingen heeft Heathen Foray een vrij consistent geluid gecreëerd dat we in opener ‘Fight’ rudimentair wensen te beschrijven als Helloween met Amon Amarth zang. Gitaristen Bernd S. Zahn en Alex Wildinger munten uit in melodieuze gitaarsolo’s, meestal vurig, maar op gepaste tijden ook fraai en sensitief. Naast de diepe grom van Robert Schroll horen we veelvuldig cleane heidense zang, al is dit niet altijd bovengemiddeld. Deze cleane zang is duidelijk geïnspireerd door Ensiferum en klinkt in het Duitstalige ‘Wofür Ich Streit’ weemoedig en wordt ondersteund door akoestische tokkelende gitaren. Hier neemt men een lange instrumentale aanloop in mediumtempo alvorens voluit te gaan. Het eveneens vrij lange ‘Tir Na Nog’ doet met zijn stotende riffs en excellente gitaarwerk dan weer wat aan Metallica denken. De band bouwt zeker de nodige afwisseling in en ondanks de strijdlustige albumtitel neemt men geregeld gas terug, zoals in het slepende en erg epische ‘Freundschaft’ dat één van onze favorieten is. De heren houden ook wel van een geintje, getuige het hakkende Rammstein achtige lolbroekenlied ‘Knüppeltroll’. Hilariteit verzekerd op festivals. Daartegenover staat het instrumentale ‘Wigrid’ als afsluiter want dat is filmisch en symfonisch als ware het een gewichtig einde van een film. Er is nog een verborgen track en ‘Winterking’ is een nogal nerveus gespeeld akoestisch stuk met cleane zang. Het album heeft een prima sound (mastering door Andy Horn in de Red Room studio) en wordt gepresenteerd met artwork van de bekende Jan Yrlund. Degelijke melodieuze pagan metal.
