OBSEQUIAE: Aria Of Vernal Tombs

Obsequiae is the project of American Tanner Anderson, earlier active in Autumnal Winds. It is remarkable that this atmospheric black metal project also uses medieval harp. Thus it adds a zest and special timbre to it. Tanner himself has been studying the instrument for years, but on ‘Aria Of Vernal Tombs’ we hear the Spanish guy Vicente La Camera Marino at work. His sonorous skills can be heard in four instrumental compositions, spread over the album which offers us for the rest an interesting blend of occult, quite melodious black metal.
The blackened vocals of our protagonist are sharp and echoing, but it suits the songs, since they are mostly mid-paced and drawling. In addition they are interwoven with an opulence of gracious leads and solos. Anderson also asked the help of drummer Andrew Della Cagna who is also active in the obscure, yet excellent Nechochwen. This is a hint in which direction you can categorize ‘Aria Of Vernal Tombs’. Aficionados of Agalloch and Panopticon should have a listen as well. The stuff that bands such as Varathron, Nightfall and Rotting Christ created in their early days has also a kind of resemblance in atmosphere and approach. This is an engrossing underground band.

Obsequiae is het project van de Amerikaan Tanner Anderson, voorheen actief in Autumnal Winds. Opmerkelijk is dat dit atmosferische black metalproject ook gebruik maakt van middeleeuwse harp en dat geeft natuurlijk een apart timbre. Tanner zelf bestudeerde jarenlang het instrument, maar op ‘Aria Of Vernal Tombs’ horen we de Spanjaard Vicente La Camera Marino aan het werk. Zijn helder spel is te horen in vier instrumentale composities verspreid over het album dat verder occulte, vrij melodieuze black metal laat horen.
De zwartgeblakerde zang van onze protagonist is scherp en galmend, maar dit past wonderwel bij de songs die veelal slepend zijn en dooraderd met een keur aan fraaie gitaarsolo’s. Anderson riep ook de hulp in van drummer Andrew Della Cagna die eveneens actief is in het obscure, maar voortreffelijke Nechochwen. Dit is een hint in welke richting je ‘Aria Of Vernal Tombs’ kunt catalogiseren. Ook liefhebbers van Agalloch en Panopticon moeten dit eens beluisteren. Wat bands als Varathron, Nightfall en Rotting Christ in hun begindagen creëerden heeft eveneens een zekere verwantschap in atmosfeer en benadering. Interessante undergroundband.
