NOMANS LAND: Last Crusade

Nomans Land is quite well-known in the melodic Viking/pagan metal scène. In despite of their far away location in Russia, they managed to build up a good reputation in (mainly) Germany and recordings of their albums always take place in Finland. On the fifth studio album ‘Last Crusade’ they have shrunk to a quartet, but it does not affect their explosive catchiness. This is inciting Viking metal, created with know-how and performed with a glorious wink of an eye to Amon Amarth. However, that was our first impression when the rebellious ‘Right To Luck’ blew our speakers. Yet Nomans Land has a signature sound of their own, mostly due to their undeniable Eastern European background and promptly illustrated by the last track ‘Bereza’ which is nothing more or less than a Russian folklore song with heavy guitars.
Juicy growls from bassist Hjervard are intermittent with sturdy clean chants of guitarists Sigurd and Alex to emphasize the heathen heroic flavour of the music. Naturally some melodious, serpentine leads of the guys are a proper part of their sound. An exception is the title track: it goes more in the direction of nineties gothic. As fervent fan of the Viking metal genre, you will not regret the purchase of ‘Last Crusade’, an album which can be pigeonholed as akin to the repertory of bands such as Heathen Foray and Adorned Brood, but it also might appeal to fans of harsher epigones Obscurity and Thrudvangar.

Nomans Land is geen onbekende meer in het melodieuze Viking/pagan metalgenre. Ondanks hun verre locatie in Rusland wisten zij een aardige reputatie op te bouwen in Duitsland en opnamen gebeuren steevast in buurland Finland. Op het vijfde studioalbum ‘Last Crusade’ is men herleid tot een kwartet, maar de aanstekelijkheid is er niet minder om. Dit is opzwepende Viking metal, met kennis van zaken gecreëerd en uitgevoerd met een flinke knipoog naar Amon Amarth. Althans, dat dachten we toch toen het opruiende ‘Right To Luck’ uit de boxen gespuwd werd. Toch heeft Nomans Land wel een eigen sound, veelal toe te schrijven aan haar onmiskenbare Oost-Europese afkomst en mooi geïllustreerd door afsluiter ‘Bereza’ dat niets meer of minder is dan een Russisch volkslied in een heftiger kleedje.
Sappige grunts van bassist Hjervard worden afgewisseld met de kloeke cleane vocalen van gitaristen Sigurd en Alex om de heidense heroïek te benadrukken. Uiteraard vormen de melodieuze, slingerende solo’s van deze heren ook weer een vast onderdeel van het aanbod. Uitzondering is dan weer het titelnummer dat eerder kiest voor jaren negentig gotische aanpak. Als fervente fan van het genre zal je geen kat in een zak kopen met ‘Last Crusade’, een album dat naadloos aansluit bij het repertoire van bands als Heathen Foray en Adorned Brood, maar ook fans van de ruwere epigonen Obscurity en Thrudvangar mogelijk kan bekoren.
