EXLIBRIS: Aftereal

This Polish heavy metal band released their first CD in 2006 but have undergone some line-up changes along the years. ‘Aftereal’ is their third and without doubt their most accomplished work so far. The twelve songs do not form some sort of concept album, but they are thematically linked one way or another. The songs are well written and well performed and will certainly appeal to fans of bands like Dream Theater or Masterplan, but the band has also the metal edge of a band like Iron Maiden.
The arrangements of some of the songs are enriched by additional instruments like violin, orchestrations or guest voices. One of the guests is Evergrey singer Tom Englund who sings lead on ‘Closer’. This is a fresh and surprisingly good record; metal with a touch of progressive rock. Great singer by the way. The nice digipak is an extra bonus.

Deze Poolse heavy metal band bracht een eerste cd uit in 2006. Sindsdien gebeurden er een paar bezettingswijzigingen en ‘Aftereal’ – hun derde full cd – is zonder twijfel hun beste werk tot nu toe. De twaalf nummers hebben een gezamenlijk leidmotief zonder dat we van een conceptplaat kunnen spreken. Ze zitten goed in elkaar en de band voert ze prima uit. Exlibris zal zeker in de smaak vallen van wie Dream Theater, Iron Maiden of Masterplan houdt.
De muziek krijgt een extra dimensie door het gebruik van orkestraties en een aantal gastmuzikanten waaronder Evergrey zanger Tom Englund op het nummer ‘Chosen’. Exlibris is op de eerste plaats een heavy metalband, maar geeft er toch een progressieve toets aan. Knappe zanger overigens. Verrassend goed in mooie digipak.
