PERZONAL WAR: The Last Sunset

We cannot understand why Perzonal War never got bigger or more famous. Yet they are an established band in the German melodic thrash metal scène and for many years we are assured of a sure-fire portion of steady tight metal when they one more time enter the Gernhart studio of drummer Martin Buchwalter. Together with vocalist/guitarist Matthias ‘Metti’ Zimmer he happens to be the driving force behind this four-piece that will celebrate its twentieth anniversary next year. Three years after the excellent predecessor ’Captive Breeding’ Perzonal War comes with the successor, the apocalyptic titled ‘The Last Sunset’. Consequently the lyrics deal with a contemplative look at the world of today and that’s nothing to get cheerful of indeed. But we do get cheerful from this album!
The band is right when saying that this is the most diverse album they ever made. Thrash metal prevails and opening track ‘Salvation’ instantly swallows the bait in heaviness, but there are also other influences. We know that the band has always been compared with Metallica and even now we cannot ignore that Metti’s voice is sometimes akin to the one of James Hetfield, yet the band has a signature sound of their own. One of their beloved trademarks is strong, catchy melodies and we can right away enjoy that during the stamping ‘Speed Of Time’ with its proclaiming iteration of the title. Fast and tight with fervent guitar solos, the concern about the world is illustrated in ’30 Years’, while the hectic ‘Metalizer’ with its powerful drums leaves no chip intact either.
But let us focus on the unexpected gems. ‘Never Look Back’ opens with doom riffs that reminds us of Black Sabbath and Paradise Lost and continues as a marvellous semi-ballad with plucking guitars and sensitive vocals. Also ‘When Faith Has Gone Forever’ is extremely compelling with its howling emotive guitar sounds and doom influences. What an amazing sounding guitar solo! This is top notch class! Yet thrash metal fans will get a proper share of the cake, since the title track, ‘Times Of Hate’ and the occluding song ‘I See Nothing’ brim with hacking tightness. This is once again a very strong album of this sympathetic band and to round off we give the suggestion to check out the catchy ‘What Would You Say’, because the melody will instantly haunt you. Highly recommended!

Het is onbegrijpelijk dat Perzonal War nooit groter en bekender is geworden. Wel zijn ze een vaste waarde in de Duitse melodieuze thrash metalscène en al jaren zijn we verzekerd van een puike portie stevige metal wanneer zij weer eens de Gernhart studio van drummer Martin Buchwalter intrekken. Samen met zanger/gitarist Matthias ‘Metti’ Zimmer vormt hij de motor van dit viertal dat volgend jaar al twintig kaarsjes mag uitblazen. Drie jaar na de prima voorganger ’Captive Breeding’ komt Perzonal War met de opvolger, het apocalyptisch getitelde ‘The Last Sunset’. De teksten werpen dan ook een beschouwende kijk op de toestand in de wereld en die is niet om vrolijk van te worden. Van dit album echter wel!
De band heeft gelijk wanneer ze stellen dat dit hun meest diverse album is. Thrash metal is de hoofdmoot en opener ‘Salvation’ hakt er meteen deftig op los, maar er zijn ook andere invloeden. We weten dat de band tot in den treuren vergeleken wordt met Metallica en ook nu kunnen we er niet omheen dat Metti’s stem nu eenmaal soms op die van James Hetfield lijkt, maar de band heeft toch wel een eigen geluid. Daar hoort een patent op sterke melodieën bij en daar kunnen we al meteen van genieten tijdens het stampende ‘Speed Of Time’ met zijn nukkig herhaalde titel. Snel en strak met vurige gitaarsolo’s wordt de bezorgdheid om de wereld bezongen in ’30 Years’, terwijl het jachtige ‘Metalizer’ met zijn krachtige drumsalvo’s ook geen spaander heel laat.
Maar laten we het eens over die onverwachte pareltjes hebben. ‘Never Look Back’ opent met doom riffs die ons aan Black Sabbath en Paradise Lost doen denken en vervolgt als een prachtige semi-ballad met tokkelende gitaren en gevoelige zang. Ook ‘When Faith Has Gone Forever’ is bijzonder meeslepend met zijn huilende gitaarlijnen en doominvloed. Wat een prachtig klinkende gitaarsolo! Dit is topklasse! Verder zullen thrash liefhebbers toch ruim aan hun trekken komen want het titelnummer, ‘Times Of Hate’ en afsluiter ‘I See Nothing’ bulken van hakkende strakheid. Dit is wederom een supersterk album van deze sympathieke band en als besluit geven we nog de suggestie mee om zeker ook het vlotte ‘What Would You Say’ te beluisteren, want die melodie ga je zo mee neuriën. Een dikke aanrader!
