ENTHRONED: Tetra Karcist

Enthroned is one of the oldest black metal bands in Belgium. Since 1993 they launched their blasphemous blastbeats at the world. They can be proud of their touring with Dark Funeral, gigs with Marduk and Emperor and their tough perseverance.
In 2005 the live album ‘Black Goat Ritual’ was released and we may consider it now as a closing of a chapter. Soon after, some problems occurred within the band. They wanted a renewed approach of the black metal legacy. Vocalist/bassist Sabathan did not agree with it and the only solution appeared to be his departure. Guitarist Nornagest is the new frontman and singer. No lyrics about church combustion anymore, but a kind of satanic celebration including more than just juvenile rebellion. It turned out well for the band. At least, I appreciate this black metal on the old accepted lines more than before.
Old school black metal fans do not need to feel desperate; Enthroned stays true to a straight approach. No keyboards, no flirting with commercial compromises, but a heavy-as-hell album of international quality. Blastbeats are backed by choir-like chants. Some may call these of a religious nature, but in this case we better call it ritual. An acoustic instrumental as ‘Deviant Nerve Angelus’ opens the way to ‘The Burning Dawn’, graced by melodious guitar lines. This surely is a tip to listen to. The incidental choirs are integrated in this opportune blasphemy in a gorgeous way by producer Harris Johns. The velocity is mainly quite fast, but they left some room for medium-paced compositions like ‘The Seven Ensigns Of Creation’ and ‘Vermin’. ‘Tetra Karcist’ of Enthroned proves that they do not avoid new challenges in order to stay “trueâ€. When you purchase the limited edition, you get two bonus tracks.

Enthroned is één van de oudste black metal bands van België. Sinds 1993 laten zij hun blasfemische blastbeats op ons los. Op hun tournees met Dark Funeral, concerten met Marduk en Emperor en stug doorzettingsvermogen mogen ze best trots zijn.
In 2005 kwam het live album ‘Black Goat Ritual’ uit en we kunnen dit nu beschouwen als een afsluiting van een periode. Daarna begon het te rommelen in de band. Men wou wel een meer volwassen benadering van het black metal erfgoed. Zanger/bassist Sabathan was het daar niet mee eens en de enige oplossing was dat hij opstapte. Gitarist Nornagest is de nieuwe frontman en zanger. Geen teksten over kerkverbrandingen meer, maar een even satanische benadering die gelukkig nu wat meer inhoudt dan puberaal verzet. Het is de band ten goede gekomen. Althans, ik kan de nog steeds op oude leest geschoeide black metal meer waarderen dan voorheen.
Old school black metal liefhebbers hoeven niet te wanhopen, Enthroned blijft gaan voor de onomwonden aanpak. Geen toetsen, geen geflirt met de commercie, maar een keihard album dat echter van internationale kwaliteit is. De blastbeats worden geruggensteund door serene gezangen. Men zou ze religieus kunnen noemen, maar in dit geval natuurlijk ritueel. Een akoestisch instrumentaal nummer als ‘Deviant Nerve Angelus’ opent de weg naar het van enige melodieuze gitaarlijnen voorziene ‘The Burning Dawn’, wat mij betreft zeker een luistertip. De sporadische koorzang werd door producer Harris Johns optimaal geïntegreerd in de opportune blasfemie. Het tempo ligt algemeen nog hoog, maar er is ook plaats voor meer slepende composities als ‘The Seven Ensigns Of Creation’ en ‘Vermin’. ‘Tetra Karcist’ van Enthroned is het bewijs dat men nieuwe uitdagingen niet uit de weg hoeft te gaan om “true†te blijven. Wanneer je de gelimiteerde versie aanschaft zijn er twee bonus tracks.
