BETH HART: Better Than Home

Although her work leans more and more towards singer-songwriter territory, she is loved by many a blues and rock guitar hero. She toured with Joe Bonamassa and sang with legends like Jeff Beck and Buddy Guy, not to mention Slash who was happy to perform with her on record. ‘Better Than Home’ is a song oriented, but very bluesy and soulful album with now and then a dash of gospel style arrangements. On selected songs, the arrangements with horns are reminiscent of the great Stax days. She has a wonderful voice full of soul and power and that is the perfect instrument to share her introspective, meditative and contemplating songs with us. Although the performance of the arrangements is technically flawless, rock fans will miss some pepper and salt.

Alhoewel haar werk meer en meer aanleunt bij de singer-songwriter traditie, is zij geliefd door heel wat gitaar grootheden die maar al te graag met haar spelen. Met Joe Bonamassa deed ze een complete tournee en Jeff Beck, Slash en Buddy Guy stonden in de rij om met haar op te nemen. ‘Better Than Home’ is een songgerichte plaat, maar de sfeer is heel bluesy en straalt ‘soul’ uit van begin tot einde. In de arrangementen durft ze ook wel een een snuifje gospel toevoegen en de arrangementen van de nummers met blazers doen de sfeer van de grote Stax dagen herleven. Maar de grote troef van Beth Hart is zonder enige twijfel haar fantastische stem die elke song genietbaar kan maken. Haar stem is het perfecte instrument om haar introspectieve, meditatieve en contemplatieve songs te verklanken. Alhoewel de uitvoering van de arrangementen vlekkeloos is, zullen rockfans toch wat peper en zout missen.
