SPECTRAL: Stormriders

The German Spectral delivers a stunning album with ‘Stormriders’; it should be heard by any of you fans of melodic Viking black metal! I bet you want to have it in your collection right now, for this is top notch class! The band is influenced by Amon Amarth (indeed, that’s obvious) and Bathory, but also by Destroyer 666, Running Wild and Manowar. In 1995 guitarist Teutenlord and drummer Destructor were the original initiators of Spectral.
Since then lots of line-up changes have occurred, but albums such as the debut ‘Barbaric Assault’ (2001) and ‘Dawn Of The Gods’ (2004) got rave reviews and were followed by gigs all over Europe. In the beginning of 2007 they entered the familiar Gernhart Studios with Martin Buchwalter for the third time (known as Perzonal War drummer too) and they came out with the heroic sounding ‘Stormriders’. Thus a great Viking metal record!
The greatest merit and talent of the band is that they know how to write fetching, inciting songs in which fast parts are alternated with slower and compelling passages. Flashing rhythms and guitar skills in the vein of Amon Amarth (lashings of melodic leads) create a proper Viking atmosphere, a song such as ‘Army Of Odin’ is an irresistible hit at the house here. Vocals are sturdy and screaming, yet low grunting parts loom up from time to time. The breaks with melodic, sometimes atmospheric guitar passages in songs like ‘Cold Steel & Frozen Blood’ and the obscure ‘Deathcult’ are a delight for our ears. My favourite on this standout album is ‘To The Gates Of Valhalla’. The quiescent beginning with sonorous guitars and mouth harp is supported by suitable percussion and passes into a glorious epic I cannot get enough of. The live recorded ‘Bang Your Head’ is a joke, I suppose, simple but effectual and the evidence that Spectral has a sense of humour. Buy this album if you are into Viking metal!!!

Het Duitse Spectral levert met hun derde album ‘Stormriders’ een dijk van een plaat af die liefhebbers van stevige maar melodieuze Viking black metal absoluut eens moeten beluisteren. En meteen aanschaffen dan maar, want dit is klasse! De band is beïnvloed door Amon Amarth (vooral!) en Bathory, maar ook door Destroyer 666, Running Wild en Manowar. In 1995 legden gitarist Teutenlord en drummer Destructor de fundamenten van Spectral.
Sindsdien hebben er tal van bezettingswijzigingen rond hen plaats gevonden, maar albums als het debuut ‘Barbaric Assault’ (2001) en ‘Dawn Of The Gods’ (2004) kregen erg goede kritieken en werden gevolgd door tal van concerten in heel Europa. In het begin van 2007 dook men de vertrouwde Gernhart Studio in met Martin Buchwalter (ook drummer Perzonal War) en kwam naar buiten met het heroïsch klinkende ‘Stormriders’. Voorwaar een lekker plaatje!
De grootste verdienste van de band is dat ze pakkende, opzwepende nummers schrijven waarin snelle stukken op een degelijke manier afgewisseld worden met langzamere en slepende passages. Vlammende ritmes en gitaren naar Amon Amarth model (veel melodieuze leads) scheppen een daadwerkelijk Viking sfeertje, een nummer als ‘Army Of Odin’ is hier al uitgegroeid tot een ware hit. De zang is stoer en krijsend, maar er zijn ook lage grunts. De breaks met melodieuze, soms atmosferische gitaarpartijen in nummers als ‘Cold Steel & Frozen Blood’ en het donkere ‘Deathcult’ zijn een lust voor het oor. Mijn favoriet op dit in zijn geheel grandioze album is ‘To The Gates Of Valhalla’. Het kalme begin met heldere gitaren en mondharp krijgt hier bijstand van aangepaste percussie en mondt uit in een glorieus epos waar ik niet genoeg van krijg. Het live opgenomen ‘Bang Your Head’ is een geintje neem ik aan, simplistisch maar effectief en het bewijs dat Spectral ook gevoel voor humor heeft. Aanschaffen die hap als je van Viking metal houdt!!!
