ORPHEUS BLADE: Wolf's Cry

Adi Bitran has worked for more than six years at this debut album ‘Wolf’s Cry’ of her prestigious project Orpheus Blade. The Israeli singer/songwriter has worked out a concept that can be considered as a kind of role play between men and beast (wolf). That is why she engaged – in addition to her vocals – a male singer, more precisely Henning Basse (Metalium, Mayan, Epysode) for the expressive, mostly theatrical vocals. This artist is a perfectionist and that is obvious: the mix and mastering of ‘Wolf’s Cry’ was done in Denmark by Jacob Hansen. In her home country she worked closely with Erez Yohanan of Amaseffer as producer and co-writer at his Cast Iron studios. For the artwork she engaged another well-known name: Eliran Kantor.
Musically we find ourselves in the genre of progressive power metal with bombastic orchestration, that’s why the link with Kamelot might be logical. The songs have a musical alike character and Adi does a fine job with her somewhat girlish vocals. Also Henning does a great job. Guitars sound powerful, although songs like ‘Under Dying Stars’ and ‘In Terms Of Twilight’ have ballad-like slow passages as well. In the latter one we even have a harsh transition into incidental grunts. Emotions and pathos prevail and towards the end the album gets more and more cinematic. A song like ‘Because He’s Made Of Flesh’ is the weakest one, although that kind of narrative parts pops up in several songs, especially the latest ones. When you have a soft spot for drama, romanticism and symphonic metal you should check out this cinematic, highfaluting ‘Wolf’s Cry’.

Maar liefst zes jaar heeft Adi Bitran gewerkt aan dit debuutalbum ‘Wolf’s Cry’ van haar prestigieuze project Orpheus Blade. De Israëlische zangeres werkte een concept uit dat strikt genomen een rollenspel tussen mens en dier (wolf) is. Daarom horen we naast haar ook zanger Henning Basse (Metalium, Mayan, Epysode) voor de expressieve, veelal theatrale zang. Dat de artieste een perfectionist is blijkt uit het feit dat ze ‘Wolf’s Cry’ liet mixen en masteren in Denemarken door Jacob Hansen. Ze werkte in het thuisland intensief samen met Erez Yohanan van Amaseffer als medecomponist en producer in diens Cast Iron studio. Voor het artwork engageerde ze nog een bekende naam: Eliran Kantor.
Muzikaal bevinden we ons in het segment van progressieve power metal met bombastische orkestratie, zodat de link met Kamelot vlug opduikt. De songs hebben een musicalachtig karakter en Adi vult met haar ietwat meisjesachtige stem de rol mooi in. Ook Henning levert een knappe prestatie. De gitaren klinken krachtig, al hebben songs als ‘Under Dying Stars’ en ‘In Terms Of Twilight’ ook een deels balladesque karakter. In het laatste is er een heftige overgang naar incidentele grunts. Emoties en pathos vieren hoogtij en naarmate het album vordert wordt het nog meer filmisch. Een song als ‘Because He’s Made Of Flesh’ is het minst interessant, al komt de verteltrant in meerdere songs voor, vooral in de laatste songs. Hou je van drama, romantiek en symfonische metal, dan moet je dit filmische, bombastische ‘Wolf’s Cry’ zeker eens onderzoeken.
