MAHALIA BARNES: Ooh Yea The Betty Davis Songbook

Mahalia Barnes is the eldest daughter of singer Jimmy Barnes, so we guess the genes are okay! On this album she teamed up with guitarist Joe Bonamassa to record an album full of covers of Betty Davis songs. Betty was married to jazz icon Miles Davis and turned him on to the music of Jimi Hendrix en other psychedelic rock which influenced Davis to go in that direction with his jazz. The heavy funk and soul on this album is reminiscent of the best days of Sly And The Family Stone and later bands like Mother’s Finest. The production of Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Bonamassa, etc.) guarantees an edgy sound approach and Mahalia is an impressive singer. She recorded these songs with The Soul Mates as a backing band and these guys know how soul and funk must be arranged, divine Hammond sounds included. Bonamassa plays completely in service of the songs, but has room to solo now and then, needless to say that this lifts also the level of the record.

Mahalia Barnes is de oudste dochter van zanger Jimmy Barnes, met de genen zit het dus wel snor. Voor deze plaat vormde ze een tandem met gitarist Joe Bonamassa om een reeks covers op te nemen van Betty Davis. Betty was gehuwd met jazz icoon Miles Davis en bracht hem in contact met de muziek van Jimi Hendrix en andere psychedelische rock. Dat is van grote invloed geweest op de muzikale ontwikkeling van Miles. De heavy funk en soul op deze plaat doet ons denken aan de hoogdagen van Sly And The Family Stone en later Mothers Finest. De productie van Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Bonamassa e.v.a.) zorgt voor voldoende scherpte in de sound en Mahalia is een indrukwekkende zangeres. Ze nam deze plaat op met The Soul Mates als begeleidingsgroep en die mannen weten hoe ze deze muziek moeten laten klinken, zoemende Hammond incluis. Bonamassa speelt volledig in dienst van de nummers, maar pakt af en toe uit met een knappe solo. Onnodig te zeggen dat dit bijdraagt aan het algehele niveau van de plaat.
