SUNSET IN THE 12TH HOUSE: Mozaic

After the departure of Edmond Karban (Hupogrammos) and Sol Faur from the eclectic Negura Bunget, they continued together in Dordeduh. Soon it resulted in the magnificent album ’Dar De Duh’. However, now they manifest themselves again in the fascinated called constellation Sunset In The 12th House. Obviously this moniker happens to be inspired by astrology, where the twelfth house stands for the sub- and unconsciousness, intuition and spiritual transcendence. This is a mainly instrumental band and the duo is assisted by the rhythm section of Dordeduh: Sergio Ponti on drums and bassist Milhai Moldoveanu. ‘Mozaic’ is the title of this debut album and that fits very well: these are beautiful, atmospheric soundscapes that smoothly complement each other, fluent and mind-blowing.
The compositions are lengthy, but due to the up and down cadenza – just like low and high tide caused by the moon – they never get monotonous. A wide range of peculiar instruments is used, for instance saz baglama in ‘Desert’s Eschaton’. Not only the Romanian folklore shines through in the songs, but also refined oriental sounds. The most striking example of that is ‘Paraphernalia Of Sublimation’. One could simply state that they zoom in on the echoing, fluttering sounds that Sol Faur already managed to get out of his instrument in Negura Bunget, but there is so much more. Even if large parts of the material have a thoughtful character, heavy riffs resound regularly. The sophisticated sounds that have resemblance with ambient, postrock and even shoegaze (I bet that Alcest fans will like this) are enriched with authentic percussion in ‘Rejuvenation’. They have always been good in that. As said before, there is a minimum of vocals on ‘Mozaic’. It is restricted to some esoteric chants in ‘Rejuvenation’, but it turns into a firm grunt in the occluding track ‘Seven Insignia’. Also due to its fetching rhythms and staccato guitars, it appears to be the less ethnic track from the record. The guys have created a special atmospheric piece of art again, which translates the identity from themselves and the surrounding world into enchanting sounds.

Nadat Edmond Karban (Hupogrammos) en Sol Faur het eclectische Negura Bunget verlaten hadden, gingen zij samen verder in Dordeduh. Dat leverde vrijwel meteen het prachtige album ’Dar De Duh’ op. Nu echter laten zij ook van zich horen in de fascinerend genaamde constellatie Sunset In The 12th House. Uiteraard is deze bandnaam geïnspireerd door astrologie, waar het twaalfde huis staat voor het on(der)bewuste, intuïtie en spirituele transcendentie. Het is een vrijwel voornamelijk instrumentale band en het duo wordt bijgestaan door de ritmesectie van Dordeduh: Sergio Ponti op drums en bassist Milhai Moldoveanu. ‘Mozaic’ is de titel van dit debuut en dat is passend gekozen: dit zijn mooie, sfeervolle klanktapijten die naadloos in elkaar passen, vloeiend en geestverruimend.
De nummers zijn lang, maar door de op en neer gaande beweging – als eb en vloed door de maan veroorzaakt – worden ze nooit eentonig. Er wordt ook een rijk scala aan vreemdsoortige instrumenten gebruikt, zoals saz baglama in ‘Desert’s Eschaton’. Niet alleen de Roemeense folklore schemert dikwijls door in de songs, maar ook geraffineerde oosterse klanken. Daar is ‘Paraphernalia Of Sublimation’ het meest treffende voorbeeld van. Je zou simpelweg kunnen stellen dat men inzoomt op de echoënde, uitwaaierende klanken die Sol Faur reeds bij de oerband uit zijn instrument toverde, maar dat is een beetje kort door de bocht gesteld. Zelfs al zijn grote stukken van het materiaal bedachtzaam, toch weerklinken zware riffs met grote regelmaat. De verfijnde klanken die verwantschap tonen met ambient, postrock en zelfs shoegaze (Alcest fans zullen dit kunnen smaken) worden in ‘Rejuvenation’ verrijkt met aparte percussie. Daar is men altijd sterk in. Zoals gezegd komt er heel weinig zang voor op ‘Mozaic’. Dat beperkt zich tot wat esoterische klanken in ‘Rejuvenation’, maar het verwordt tot een ferme grunt in afsluiter ‘Seven Insignia’ dat mede door zijn aanstekelijke ritmiek en staccato gitaren het minst etnische nummer van de plaat is. De heren hebben weer een sfeervol kunstwerk gecreëerd dat de eigenheid van henzelf en de omringende wereld vertaalt in betoverende klanken.
